first cukes of the year
My first cucumbers are getting ready...has anyone else grown the English Chelsea variety? From what I've read they are to be picked when 15"-18" long. Here's a pic...and they look different from one end to the other...never seen a cuke develop like this but haven't grown these before.

Re: first cukes of the year
I'm in California, but I have three types of cukes growing. Armenian Cucumbers have produced two large ones already with 2 more coming soon. I have my first lemon cuke growing and I have some small pickling type (can't remember the name of the type off the top of my head).
We grew a different variety of English Cucumber last year. I loved them. Boy they did some wild shapes though!!! Yours look beautiful

first cucke
I picked teh largest one today, sliced it, served half with some ranch dressing for dipping and the other half in a salad....sweet and crispy.
I think this variety is so long that the vine end develops quidker than the terminal end.

You're making my mouth water. Mine are still a long way from producing here in the northeast but I don't have any of the extra long ones.

Those cucumbers look wonderful.
WOW, like QB I am a long ways off, with only one flower on one plant.
I am attempting to grow them up Bamboo, will this give the needed support?

Re: first cukes of the year
The bamboo might support small picking cucumbers. For anything larger, a sturdier support is advisable.
Back 2004 and 2005, I grew two 42.5-oz. cukes and one 38.5-oz one. However, they were grown in pots and sprawled on the ground.

Beautiful cukes! Now I'm motivated to grow some myself. I love to them slightly pickled - slice them and add sugar and rice vinegar, then leave it in the fridge for a day. Refreshing, sweet and tangy. Maybe an acquired taste?

Re: first cukes of the year
I pickled quite a few last year as well as tried something new...maybe I should start a new thread...is was a fermented cucumber recipe using a spiced, seasoned brine instead of vinegar. This is served as an appetizer at Ted's Montana Grill...and from what I have read, was popular in east coast jewish delis and is called a cucumber half-sour.

Thanks Donna. They ARE pickling cucumbers so great that that will be enough. I have never had much luck with the others so thought I would try pickling this year
