Tomatoes! :D

So I've been harvesting the Green Zebra Cherries for a couple of weeks now, and I'd harvested one Pork Chop (yellow tomato) about a week ago. Today I got to harvest 8 different varieties! And man, are they YUMMY!

They're all very different, but I like them all. I really can't say, at this point, which one is my favorite... yet. Some are more sweet, some are more tart. I'm just very happy to finally be eating them! What a Face

And I just tried the Berkley Tie Dye. I believe that one may end up being my favorite. You can actually taste different flavors for the different colors. It's pretty wild! What a Face

Oh my goodness those look amazing!!! I would love to be eating mine, but the BIRDS will not stop eating anything with color on them!!!

BEAUTIFUL!!! Your making me sooooo hungry!!! My garden is still young, so I haven't gotten to harvest anything, but it's getting there though. Some of my plants are taking and are really starting to grow. When I see you pics...I CAN'S WAIT!!!

llama momma, I'm eating them plain. Very Happy

Once I start getting enough, I'll be eating them on sandwiches, in sauces, etc. Right now, I can't resist just putting them in my mouth as soon as they hit the kitchen. They taste so good plain, I can't imagine putting mayo on them!

ArkansasSFGardener, I was having a problem with birds eating my blueberries. I kept wondering where they were disappearing to, and then I saw the culprit, hopping from the container of the citrus trees, to the blueberries and back. I don't mind sharing some, but I've been going out much earlier to make sure I get a bunch of berries every day too.

Todays harvest. I'm gonna have a tomato sandwich in a few minutes. Yea, it's late, but I'm a night owl. Wink

I noticed some cracking today on a few of the maters. I know this is supposed to be from inconsistent watering. The beds are self-watering, so I usually just fill the reservoirs, and once in awhile give them some top water, like when I use compost tea or feed them. It's been raining though. Would this cause them to crack? Is there a way to lessen the damage, in that case? Thanks bunches! Very Happy

Is the cracking specific to a variety?

Sometimes cracking is also caused by the insides growing faster than the outside skin.

I grew 5 varieties last year and the black krim tomatoes were the only ones I had this problem with. The tomatoes were still delicious, I simply cut off the affected area.

I've had Black Krims planted for three years now. They seem to split when the watering is inconsistent. I can pretty much guarantee that they will split when I start falling behind with the watering. I usually overcompensate and drench them- that's when they start splitting. I've left a few on the plants to see what happens (thinking I may salvage a few for the table) but they start rotting if the crack is deep into the pith and am now cutting the cracked fruit off so the plant will continue to push more blossoms. The newer hybrids are bred for thick skins that can tolerate being pig-piled by the hundreds of pounds into shipping vats to be trucked from the fields to the distributors. They can even tolerate less water- early girl is a variety that is dry farmed just 30 miles north of my area, and they are said to be pretty tasty when this method is used.

camprn, it's happened on several different ones, and it only happened after several days of rain. Hence my assumption that maybe the downpour we've been having is the culprit. I've been harvesting the ones that are cracked, even if they aren't quite ripe. It's supposed to continue raining for the next few days, and then we get some dry, sunny days again. I hope they don't all crack! It seems to be happening on more mature tomatoes that either ready, or almost ready, for harvest. So no loss. Like Rooster said, I'll just cut that part off and eat the rest. It's not really severe, just some little cracks.

The reason I asked is that some varieties are known to be more prone to cracking or catfacing. I was curious which ones you were actually having trouble with.
