Garlic anyone? Empty Garlic anyone?

Post  bnoles 6/3/2013, 4:22 pm

Today, my oldest grandson, Zach (6) and I harvested the garlic patch and WOW... did I ever get carried away when planting last fall. These bulbs are piled 3 high on the tail gate of my pickup truck, needless to say that we won't have any vampire problems around here. cyclops Evil or Very Mad

Zach loves garlic like I have never seen a child do to such extreme.

We ended up with about 40 bulbs which most were quite large. These were planted early last October and are Early Italian from Burpee (soft neck)

Wow! what a nice haul! congrats Garlic anyone? 3170584802 We pulled the rest of ours. We got some pretty nice ones and some small ones, but that's OK too. I attempted to braid it, my first real attempt and I need some practice haha! It's fun to pull it, kind of a surprise each time! What variety is yours? I don't know what mine is...home depot special, and some I just threw in the ground from Costco that was intended to eat...not plant, but it grew pretty nicely! Wink

For the newbees, the term 'pulling garlic' is kind of a misnomer. Garlic should be lifted from beneath, so as not to damage the bulbs. If the bulbs are damaged, they will rot faster in storage.

Thanks for that Camp , I've had a good read of all the site ...in MM it's possibly not quite so pertinent to lift them as my garlic almost climbed out into my hand when it was read for harvesting.

Thanks! Yours looks terrific and I like the braiding job although I am going to take the lazy way out and crop off the greens and roots and hang them in an onion netting. Maybe next harvest I will try the braids, they are cool looking. Garlic came from Burpee and was named "Early Italian".

Can't wait to grill some like Camprn suggested, maybe she will share a recipe (hint hint)

So right you are! I dug a hand trowel beneath each bulb and pried them up gently.

Mine pulled out very easily out of the soil..no need to dig at all. I sort of got the hang of the braiding towards the end of the braid. You should try it! It was easy and fun. rahrah

Wow Bob! Your garlic looks amazing! Nice job. Your back yard is the Gilroy of the south. I hope to plant in October.

Camprn, I enjoyed the link you posted about harvesting. I continued by exploring and reading a bit more. Thanks for posting link.

Here is my garlic - I think it will be ready to harvest pretty soon. I have one whole 4x4 each of Silver Rose, Extra Select and Early Italian - all from Burpee. We'd never done garlic before. These were all planted last October. I think we'll see which one we like the best and save some to plant again this fall - and not nearly this much!
**Edited - sorry it's turned crooked - not sure why it did that!

This is the first year I am growing garlic and I just planted it. My thought are if it's not ready to be picked this fall it can stay where it is till spring and I will have early garlic for next year.
