I know this; if you don't get them fairly early after they spring up, they get tough. some of mine were too tough to use so they were composted--wonder if I will have some volunteer garlic?

So what you mean is that I should harvest the garlic and take the scapes off that have the bulbils and take the bulbils off and then put the garlic in with the ones that are drying? Do I also dry the bulbils before I plant them?

Something like that seems a logical approach. Maybe let the scapes with bulbils dry together and take the bulbils off when they seem like they want to fall. I wouldn't do anything too much, let nature play out.
Remember I have not done this purposefully, it just happened.

so i pulled some of my hard neck garlic today leaves are all dead good size bulbs
the others are mostly still green and small

However even though they are smaller and mostly green stalk one Question:
most of the leaves are still green Good however the end of the main stalks each one has a small bulb
will get a photo later. They are about the size of a quarter in length and diameter, what are these are they garlic seed bulbs for fall or scapes?

ok two questions
what should i do with these garlic bulbs with the leave bulb?

no mention of what to do with the sprout?

now what do i do with this and the small Garlic bulb that i reburied?

recoush, I think that thing has the bubils in it. Take a look at the posts above your last 2. I think they address bubils. I ate one once and it's really strong, but I never planted them. I may have read (or dreamed?) that it takes 2 yrs for a bubil to grow into a garlic bulb but check me on that by googling 'planting garlic from bubils' or some such.

OH, here's where I read the 2 yr thing...it's from page 1 of this thread:

I have 7 bubils that I have drying. I think I am going to attempt to plant them in the spring and see what happens. I may save some for other years just in case this doesn't work. Great way to give them away after 2 years.

The bulbils I planted last fall have made 1" across bulbs this year.
