Corn Question Empty Corn Question

My corn plants are starting to flower and I don't see any ear development. Is this normal?
Also there are what looks like baby corn plants coming up from the bottom of the stems from below ground level. Are these new plants or part of regular growth. Some plants have them and some don't. Should I remove them?

Gunny I asked the same question the first time I grew corn:

The extra sprouts around the base is normal too, just leave them be.
