Have tassels that are already producing pollen. No silks visible. Is this something I should be concerned about? I guess I've never taken such a close look at things when I was growing huge row gardens. Laughing

Yes, I am babying my garden now. It's easy to do when it is not so huge and easier to take care of.

Corn looks good! It will put on ears quickly, mine did in just a couple days. It will put on silks to be pollinated, then make the ears. What variety is your corn?

Can't remember the variety. It is an early corn. There are no signs of ears at all. No silks. I just read something on another site regarding this. One of the causes is lack of moisture. I've been watering almost everyday. Wonder if the heat wave has had anything to do with this.

Will have to wait and see. The corn on the right of the picture was planted 2 - 3 weeks later so maybe that will do better.

Your question got me thinking so I did some searching. I read that the tassel forms first and then days later the silk and that the tassel has to fully emerge for it to put out its pollen. it can take I think it said 10-14 days for the tassels to release all its pollen. It also said that each strand of silk is attached to a kernel. For each kernel to grow, that particular silk needs to be fertilized from the pollen. This is the site I got that info from. http://www.uwex.edu/CES/crops/Pollination.htm

In past years I have had stalks look just like yours at this stage of the game and they have grown corn. They look good!
