Found this on top of my compost pile this morning. What is it and does it need to come off, or should I mix it in?

If it's safe, maybe I'll leave it and see how big it gets...?

Blech!...this thing just keeps getting worse and worse No , but the Wiki write up was interesting. It's like it has a brain and it moves around. All I can say is I'm glad it's safe.

I thought I was going to have to book the sites vicar to come and exorcise the ectoplasmic form on the compost heap because someone had the very devil of a job in building it . Laughing

I like the dog vomit name , though it's not eaxctly looking like that of our mutt hooping back a couple of pound of horse , pig, sheep , duck ,chicken etc etc muck on the lounge carpet ...... BLEK !

I just went out to play in the compost pile and the vomit is gone. Must have melted into the pile with all the rain we just had and will probably surface after a few more turnings.

Due to a hip flare up I've been turning my pile like Plantiod suggested, the same way you eat an elephant - a little at a time. I slice a foot off and toss fork fulls over the top to the other side of the pile and that's it...done for today. Easy peasy, and I get to visit with all the worms. What a Face

CC your fork is massive compared to mine and I'll bet yours weighs three times as much as mine ..
My fork is a classic UK styled two tined pitch fork, with tines about 8 inches long and six inches wide , inside the original tines there is another set of tines welded in to make it a very light four tined fork .
The handle is a waisted handle and the whole assembled fork reaches up to an inch above my arm pit .
It is so easy to use , hardly any bending at all and as I stagger around I tend to use it as a third leg when needed instead of my crutches .

I'll get a picture of the tools I use and bung it on the thread ...... If I remember .

Got side tracked by the picture of the compost pile. I meant to write about the following:

I found what looks like the dog vomit slime mold growing inside my bag of Starbucks coffee ground. I thought I dried out the coffee "patties" in the sun well enough to re-bag them. I guess it's okay to add to my beginning compost cage? Will it aid in the composting process? Speed it up? Any comments?

Yes you can add coffee grounds to your compost pile. It does help it heat up as it is a nitrogen source. Use no more than 10% by volume in your pile. So if you are building it, break up your "patties" and if you can and mix it in. Also, the smaller the pieces of ingredients you use, the quicker your pile with become finished compost.
