gourds

I thought that I would start a thread about some of the gourds I've grown, instead of putting it on the cotton thread where the other gourd info is I posted.

I have some mini gourds. I opened some of them up, so I have some seeds for them if anyone is interested in those. The vine still gets big even though the gourds are tiny.

So what do you make from mini gourds? A little dipper!

Josh, I think that is so cute! I've never grown gourds, I did not realize they came so small!.

we pulled out our old gourd plants today...one of the roots was 20 FEET long! yes, we measured it! There were two main roots, and we kept pulling and pulling until it finally snapped. We have bottoms on our beds, so the root just kept going I guess. It might have been a little bit longer, but it finally snapped at 20 feet...crazy!!

Oh man! great idea! I'll have to see if we still have it. We threw stuff in the compost pile...I'll see if it's still intact!! Thanks for the idea! gourds 3170584802

That's a LONG root! I had no idea a gourd root would grow so long! for sure get a picture if you can!

I found some more gourds to show you. My mom found a picture of me when I was young, and a garden friend of hers had sent me a gourd, and my mom painted it for me, I still have it.

It's a birdhouse.

And this is a birdhouse I painted.

And this one is my favorite one. It is a music shaker, my mom made it for me. She drilled some holes in the handle and laced some leather on it and then added a bead and feather at the end.

When I was young we planted gourds on a cone shaped trellis and I could play inside it like a teepee.

OK...I pulled the root out of the compost pile, and "weaved" it through our vertical trellis. A little bit of the end broke off because it had dried out a bit. The beginning of the root is at the far left, and the end is at the red hose at the right. The whole trellis is approx 25' long. I hope you can see the root, it's the long white "thing" going across the trellis. Crazy!!

WOW southern gardener! That's aweome!!

I tried to grow gremlins last year but failed (STUPID DEER). I didn't know you could dry them and make things out of them though Embarassed

. What fun, I will have to try again this year!

thanks guys. This was a loofa gourd. It didn't do much, then all of a sudden this one little plant took off for some reason, so we let it go and got a few gourds!! It was sort of fun pulling up the root, and I kept telling my husband, "look at this root"!! I couldn't believe how far it went! haha

WOW that looks AWESOME! I've never seen a root that long on any gourd before!!!

My cat's belly was shaved recently for an ultrasound, and you know what? I totally love rubbing that soft belly of hers. Kidded my husband we should keep it shaved. I bet you love rubbing your kitty's lovely soft skin, right?? -- and yes, back to gourds!

We DO love the way their soft warm skin feels! Right after she eats her belly is so round - should I paint it up like a gourd? rofl
