How to store Worm Juice? Empty How to store Worm Juice?

Post  wncsohn 1/7/2013, 2:58 pm

I've got about 2-3 gallons of worm juice or worm tea in my bottom bin that I need to remove. I don't have anything going in the garden right now to use it on and was wondering how other people deal with this situation?

Will it loose it's "potency" over time? Is it worth it to save it for spring?

Any tips, hints & idea's would be greatly appreciated!

The leachate is likely to be loaded with microorganisms. (this is different than worm tea) Don't know what will happen if it is stored. Think it might get really smelly too. Sooo - I would head over to redwormcomposting.com where Bentley Christy runs the site. He shares over a dozen years of his experience. Bet you will find an answer there. The only idea I have is to dilute it and put it into any existing flowerbeds now. Let nature do what it wants with it.
It won't hurt and it may do a lot of good(?)

When you find a good answer that you're comfortable with could you share your findings? I'd love to know.

I have been watering my basil plants with the stuff from the worm bins
I brought them indoors when it started to get cold outside. I took the 3 best plants and put them in large pots and have them in a window in the house. They seem to love it, I get about a cup a day from my worm bins now. I have not noticed any problems. I intend to keep these pots with soil and reintroduce them to my compost pile in the spring, thereby saving the microorganisms

Just my opinion, if you are having lots of leaching of liquid from your worm bin, then it's too wet. Add some dry paper/cardboard to the bin. If the food you put in is real wet, put some dry paper/cardboard to soak up the liquid. This also makes it easier when it comes time to harvest.

I find that the amount of fluid below is quite dependant on what I feed the worms. WHen I feed them squash there tends to be lots of drainage, whereas other veggies do not retain as much moisture. But my main worm farm is designed with a drainage tray in the bottom. That is where most of the castings go too.

Llamma Momma - Thanks for the website! Lots of info there that will come in handy. Since it's only a month or so until I can start my seedlings I'm a little hesitant to dump it out.

GWN - Wow! That's awesome that you've still got plants from your garden going. My garden last year was .. well .. not an epic or total fail .. but pretty darn close! I think I got a few tiny tomatoes out of it, a bit of basil and a couple of tiny watermelon's but not any plants good enough to save. Although I will say that even after that foot of snow we had, my Lavender plant appears to still be hanging in there, all lonely, out there in the garden! LOL Maybe I'll treat it to some worm juice!

Plantoid - What a great link! I think I'll take her advice and just save it for my spring garden beds. Smile Thanks for the link! Will be checking it out more later, for sure!

littlejo - This worm juice has been building up over the course of the last 6 or 7 months! Smile The wormies are super happy where they are, although I must admit, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea for me to start adding just a bit more newspaper to their little paradise! But yeah, I always try to lay wet food on a dry piece of cardboard (think tea box) when I put it in there. Probably not enough newspaper though ... so I will look into adding more on a regular basis.

I want to thank all of you who replied! Great information was posted and I just love when people help each other out on here! What a great community!

Storing for a few months will be fine. I would keep it cool (maybe in a garage or shed), but don't let it freeze. Also, poke a couple of small holes in the lids or take the lids off so air can circulate and won't become stagnant.

I usually accumulate a few gallons during the winter and then use it to kick start things in the spring.

Carol, with my slightly warped sense of humour I thought maybe you were juicing your worms.
I have had a worm bin since August last year and so far I have never had any leachate. When I came to harvest the castings just before Christmas it was so easy because the castings just acted like sugar.
Now I have added more moisture to my bin and I think the worms are really enjoying the extra wetness. I only use rainwater. Next time the castings will be damper and perhaps harder to handle, but so long as the worms themselves are happy, then so am I.
Another SFGer who is so looking forward to spring and all the things I hope to do better after what I have learned from this forum and the lovely helpful people in it.

LOL about juicing worms! omg lol!!

But yeah, I think I'm just going to pour it into a 5 gallon bucket (setting the lid on top loosely) and save it for Spring!

And FarmerDave glad you\'re here Nice to have additions to our SFG Family!
