Apple #1 and #2 sizes?

Apple #1 and #2 sizes?
Any preference with apple size when preparing them for canning?
A local farm has #1 and #2 size apples for sale. #2 are smaller and less expensive, but I figured it might take more of them and more work since they're smaller.

Re: Apple #1 and #2 sizes?
I usually get what's the cheapest baking apple. I don't usually pay attention to how big they are because I cut them up anyway...
What does it mean if they are #1 or #2?

I think you have answered your own question, JustMe. Same apples but graded for size and possible blemishes.
If you want to do an experiment, buy half and half, and see what produces the most prepared apples, then compare cost and time.
I do love it when people experiment then tell us the results.

Re: Apple #1 and #2 sizes?
I think I'd go to the farm and ask them what the difference is. Do they taste different? Get them to let you taste them!
Usually apples are graded for quality, not size. #2 apples out here are from the 2nd picking, and probably will have more blemishes, and maybe some bugs/worms. They spray for bugs/worms on some trees, pick the pretty apples, and sell them as #1, then they go back and clean the trees, and most are not as pretty, but are just as good.
You reminded me! I've got to go get apples this yr. I'm out of apple sauce and apple butter.
Hint: Invest in 1 of those apple peeler/corers. They work wonders and save so much time!

Re: Apple #1 and #2 sizes?
here, #1's are first quality for a appearance, #2's are the ones that are blemished, odd shape, etc. the eating quality, for my money, is the same, but the prices on 2nds are so good that i always choose them for canning purposes. i only buy 1sts for serving whole or fresh, or for root cellaring.

I understand seconds and I often prowl the Farmer's Market just before closing time to get a good deal. I guess the word 'size' threw me.

Re: Apple #1 and #2 sizes?
it did me too, that's why i mention that here it has nothing to do with size. but i usually buy from the amish or from farmers that i actually know (as in, have met them, gone to their farms and looked at their crops). maybe there are different grading systems in different areas.
Re: Apple #1 and #2 sizes?
The website for the produce place says that the #2 are a smaller size. No biggie, just wondering. I've found a number of different apple orchards and stands that sell heirloom varieties I have never heard of.
I'm starting to 'get' some of this produce lingo - seconds, bushels, and the like.
