contemplating murder

Why? because my husband left ALL MY SEEDLINGS OUTSIDE.... may not sound like a big deal, but it is Michigan... in april... which mean just above frost.

I had to work yesterday and asked him to bring them inside. He didn't bring them in because "he didn't think it would get that cold".

I got home late, got up and on the road early today, and didnt get home until well now (9:30) and them temp is in the mid 40's. and... THEY WERE STILL OUT THERE!!!!! So i run around to get them inside, but they area all limp and I think burned. Like some of the peppers and maters look like their leaves have holes or these paper thin areas.

what do I do? besides serve prison time... I have about 40 pepper plants and 60 tomato plants...

Just thought, maybe this should go in outside the box? feel free to move.

Ouch! I don't have any advice except wait and see. The peppers are probably history as they are very tender, but depending on the size of the tomato seedlings, they can take a bit of frost so some might come back. I know of a good defense attorney!

Ever watch the show Mythbusters? Well, I've heard a myth in my local gardening club (a friend of a friend sort of thing) about someone reviving their frost bitten plants by immediately putting them under grow lights for a 2-3 days.

If you're desperate and have them available...Might be worth a try. But if it really works you've got to promise to let me know. I too have lost batches of my prized pepper plants and it still hurts.

Kiss the boo-boo and apply Bactine? Hey, it worked wonders for my kids! I'm trying to imagine you standing on a chair to get in your husband's face (CP is nearly a foot and a half shorter than hubby)

The damage is done. Hopefully, worse case, they'll be a little slow off the git go.

Now then, discussing husbandcide is probably best done outside the box!

Ok, we'll see, the tomatoes are all upstairs in a warm spare bedroom with a grow lights and such, the peppers are in the basement that is an ok temp with lights on them also.

and Boff, i was a good wife this time, i didn't tell him how much it bugged me! I just smiled and said, "just listen next time ok kid?" but inside of me was another story Mainly cause I had babied these so much and this is the first time i had started anything that was time consuming from seed.

Alas. They are getting a sun bath and some heat. Maybe a little fertilizer once things settle with them.

I hope your babies are doing well this morning. My guess is that @ 40F what doesn't kill them will make them stronger. They are tender, but freezing temps were not reached. I may be wrong but it is my understanding that even if it is slow, cell division continues down to 38F. Let us know how they did. Cheers!

Wow, CP!! That's a whole lotta plants......so maybe, just maybe, SOME of them will do just fine.

To steal a phrase, "I feel your pain."

I had roughly 60 seedlings beneath a grow light on the counter in our laundry room. This is the first year I've tried to start anything indoors, so I've babied them from the start. Last week my youngest grabbed the bottle of Spray 'N Wash next to the washer and misted them with it because "they needed a drink of water. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

So, I've started over with some. Others I replaced with plants ready to go from the nursery so I could go ahead and get some in the ground.

yeah it is a lot of plants, but they were for my mother in law, sister in law, and my mom, in addition to me. I planned on selling at the farmers market and they are not "normal" burpee type. I got them all online, traded, etc.

The tomato plants are still limpy, and the pepper plants have these paper thin "holes" on the leaves. I'll try to get a picture later tonight..


Humm... problem is I don't have a compost pile... yet.....

BUT, father in law, dad, and hubby DID dig a trench for the sump line...

no compost pile... but I do have a trench from the sump being dug...

Anyway, any other ideas on what to do? Some look scary weak...

OHhhhhh! Poor you, CP. I've had to leave my seedlings in my DHs care several times this spring, too. It's hard to be a mother and leave your babies with those whose minds may not think as we do!

So far he hasn't done any worse than I so I guess I'm just lucky.

I wish I had a magic wand I could wave for you and make it all better. The warm lights should help I think, if anything helps.

I can see how frustrated and annoyed you must be! I would be upset too. But try to think positive. I know of a case in Australia where a farmer's neighbor sprayed something that made the farmer's crops wither and die but the plants came back and the farmer had the most bountiful season ever. Come to think of it I think it was a tomato crop. So try to focus on all the good things your hubby does and try not to be annoyed. Miracles do happen. If the plants don't die it might make them stronger. If they do, well then, maybe you're supposed to plant a different crop.

I had a few good chuckles over the replies to your post anyway. I'll keep you and your plants in my prayers. Let us know how they're doing.

Ironic thing is... his mom is a farmers daughter and her garder is akin to an acre or so I'll never transform her into a SFGer.

Ad of now, he is still breathing. He knows I love him and he messed up so he made me dinner since I won't be getting out of work until later

I think you should buy him a banjo. There's nothing like the happy, jingly sound of a banjo. You should also buy him some banjo lessons.

Here's my line: He'll really get into this banjo thing....You know, really focused.

As he gets better at his new hobby, he'll also learn an amazing new penchant for focus. When you ask him to do something for you, he'll stare intently into your eyes, run immediately out into the yard, and perform your requested task.

Then, he'll run back into the house, and play the banjo.

The next time you walk into your calm house, you'll have plants that are warm and snugly, sitting there in your house growing away to the soulful and stylistic banjo goodness that your husband has created for them. In fact, you could tell him that little SFG seedlings prefer his banjo prowess.......

I'm pretty sure that if I forgot to do something for my wife, that she would forgive me.

And, possibly, buy me another banjo.......

I agree whole heartedly that he'll be more focused...hours will pass and he won't notice.
Seasons will change but unless he's figured out that elusive melody...he won't notice.
Oh, the plants will be warm and snuggly with that banjo playing them sweet lullabies but you'll find yourself praying for a broken D string.

And as the wife of a Banjo-picking man...he has forgotten many a thing and he has never seemed sorry enough to warrant a new Banjo. But you keep trying Gottfried...

I guess you could sit by your babies seedlings bedside and read them stories in hopes that it helps them recover: maybe something along the lines of the little pepper that could.

Speaking of the little peper that could, maybe if you just have to start over again you could get a habanaro pepper plant and see what that little pepper could do to your husband.
