Cucumbers - where to place the 2?
This is my first year to plant cucumbers.
Where in the square do the two seeds go? Do they get planted diagonally from each other? In the same hole? Or something else?

I think diagonally works well for root space purposes.

Re: Cucumbers...where to place the 2?
If you are starting from seeds...I would first start in lil pots.....and if they are not bush cucumbers....they need the trellis....I would plant them close to the trellis 4 inches from each side of the 12" square.....2 plants......and than there is room to plant something else in the same square.....lettuce, spinach, carrots...of your choice....Ruth

Re: Cucumbers - where to place the 2?
I would encourage you to plant more than 2 seeds per square. The main reason being is that for various reasons plants will sometimes die. If you plant only two seeds, you could lose 50% of your crop if only one plant doesn't make it. I would plant 4-6 per square, directly into the garden. Cucumber really do not like to be transplanted, you can do it, but you may have better results direct sowing. What are you going to use for trellis?

Camp, did I see some photo's you had posted of 8 per square, or am I thinking of someone else?

Re: Cucumbers - where to place the 2?
I would place them in 2 spots in the square as tabletopper mentioned above, and I would put 2 or 3 at each spot and cut off the extras after they have germinated and are looking healthy, leaving just 2 per square. A provision against some not germinating. I also agree with sowing them directly in the soil outdoors since they are very touchy about being transplanted and they grow quickly outdrs anyway. Remember, cukes like their soil temps approx 60*F so don't rush them.

I have 3 in a 5 gal bucket with a tomato cage for trellis.
Hope they grow well. Managed to transplant them but they took a while to start regrowing.

Ugh, hmmm. yup that was me. I'm all about INTENSIVE plant spacing .RoOsTeR wrote:Camp, did I see some photo's you had posted of 8 per square, or am I thinking of someone else?
But I didn't want to overwhelm the OP with such advice... I had great success with at least 8 plants per square, four squares in a row. The variety was Spacemaster.

Re: Cucumbers - where to place the 2?
I had my daughter and her friend plant 8 in a square. 2 each in 4 holes. We'll see what happens.
These are Burpee sweet burpless hybrid seeds. I will also plant Burpee pickler hybrid seeds because I'd like to give canning a try.
We made a trellis like the one in the book.
Quiltbea - our evening temps aren't at 60F yet, so thanks for the heads up. This year, we're trying more things by seed. I've been planting 1/hole - thinking that everything's going to come up - but am learning that isn't always the case.

Re: Cucumbers - where to place the 2?
@Justme.....To clarify: The SOIL temps should be 60*F for cukes and corn for sowing directly in the ground. Air temps can differ but the 60* is for germinating seeds.
Its evening AIR temps at 60*F for eggplants which improves their production.
