I have one 3x6 box this year and I'm thinking about mulching it once everything pops up. I must have had bad MM because I'm getting weeds everywhere and volunteer tomatoes everywhere as well. I'm wondering if anybody else does as well and what mulch would be best.

I'm a straw fella... Already covered my strawberry bed with it, and will be doing the same in my 4x8 once all the seeds come up... Just make sure it's certified weed free, or your defeating the purpose.

Thanks for the info. I think I will try mulching up to an inch or so thick with some compost.

I guess I never considered the top layer of compost I put on as mulch....I always considered mulch to be some type of wood chip. I guess..I do mulch with compost.

Do you mulch you SFG? Empty Some

Post  CharlesB 5/16/2012, 11:27 pm

Some I do some I don't. The ones I do is for moisture retention and the extended release of nutrients. The new beds I set up that are pure MM do not have mulch on them. The plants I am growing in them cover up the soil so fast that it is always in the shade anyway.
