My humble SFG

Entire garden left to right
1) original raised bed from previous owner w/non MM, rhubarb, lots of weeds, and 1 compost bin
2) asparagus bed (new this year)
3) converted sandbox left from previous owner, my original SFG last year
4) strawberry bed (new this year)

We are not allowed to put up permanent fences in our neighborhood unless we have a pool, hence the u-post and plastic fencing set-up.


2x2 asparagus bed. I transplanted 7 plants from the original SFG box. This is our first harvest year, so I may have hurt our yield this year. The root system was amazing, so I can see why asparagus should get a dedicated box. The top half plus 1 planting in the lower left corner are new crowns this year.


Partial view into the original 4x8 SFG box. The asparagus was removed from the left side. That side of the garden is N, so later I will build a trellis as described in the book. Strawberries were removed from the opposite side, so now have 11 open grids.

Thyme spilling over the diagonal brace in the top R. That's where we typically found a toad last year. The other 'big' plants are brussel sprouts. Last year I ended up w/a kohlrabi & brussel sprout cross, so I'm giving it another go.

One of two worm tubes. The corners have diagonal braces, and I wasn't successful planting anything in the 2 corners on the N side. So in went the tubes. I've found worms all over the garden since installing them maybe a month ago.

My garden markers are just plastic utensils - fork, knife, spoon.



Thanks to the forum, I created dedicated strawberry and asparagus beds.
The strawberry bed was supposed to be 4x4 with a 3x3 turned, and a 2x2
on top. The Home Depot cut the lumber for me, and the boxes went
together relatively well. (My shop teacher would have given me a C.)
The 2x2 box would not stay on the 3x3 box safely, so that became
asparagus bed.

This has 52 total plants - 36 on the top layer and 16 on the bottom layer. Bottom L corner has 'patio berries' that my friend gave me last year, which is what the plant marker called them. That was the only plant I let produce last year. The top has everbearing strawberries - divided and transplanted from the original SFG. This will be harvest year for those. The bottom R corner and other corners include Cabot variety strawberries. We'll see how those turn out.

So thankful for everyone's help, posts and input here. Couldn't have built this without all that I've learned here.

Asparagus is planted 4/square. Because it's not a huge SFG, I wanted to maximize the yield.

Looks great! Don't you just love a neighborhood that bans permanent fences? If I were you I'd just keep adding temporary fences all around the yard, the worse they look the better!
