We have lovely bean plants in our SFG. But something is eating them. We want to remain organic. Any suggestions? They are eating holes in the leaves, but we have not seen the little leaf eaters as of yet.

are they round holes or triangle? usually in my garden, triangle means birds are pecking at them. If they're round, look at the back of the leaves, and see if you can see any critters?

If you can post a picture of the bean damage, it might help some of the more experienced gardeners to make some educated guesses... Smile

Every year when I plant beans I lose some to snails/slugs until I get on the ball and take care of them. And I do not fool around with beer. Everything else in the garden goes untouched but they love the beans.

I am just a newbe but have just found cabbage worms on some of my crops. Yesterday I found a caterpillar type worm on my beans also, it was black and yellow and brown(squish). Today I was told to use BT (bacillius thuringiensis) other names for it are thuricide and dispel. The lady at the lawn and garden center said it works on all caterpillar type critters. I got the thuricide liquid to spray on beans, squash, tomatoes, rutabagas, cabbage, and kohlrabi. Did I mention it is concidered organic Laughing .

see article for pictures of the critter and the coments suggesting BT.

Good luck.
