Confused on how many strawberries per square...

So according to Mel you can plant them 4 per square so that's what I planned but I got them today and it say to keep them 24" apart. I'm assuming that would be the case if you let the runners grow but I plan to keep them in line so how many would you plant per square?

Hey fellow SDakotan!,

I'm planting 4 per square and am going to trim runners. I just got more today to make an ENTIRE 4x4 of strawberries. YUM!

I wondered the same thing about how many per square but figured I would go with the book and cut runners.

I've got a new 4x4 box of strawberries too. Four in each square. If you go by the book you cut off all the runners to put all the energy into the mother plant, then according to Mel after 3-4 yrs. you pull them all out and start over with new plants. Other people on the forum do things differently and you can go to the search box to find other methods.

I wasn't too sure either since I had the same questions as you. We have 8 plants and went 2 per square but will probably move up to 4 next season! It is fun learning all of this!

I just planted a box of strawberries - 4 plants per square, 64 in all.

But I see it's supposed to get into the mid-20s for the next few nights. Does anyone know if that will hurt the new strawberry plants (they're just a root system with a nub at this point) and if they should be covered at night when it gets this cold?

HI NHG for a bit of insurance, you could lay a sheet of plastic over the area and secure it with some large rocks or milk jugs with water in them. Remove the plastic before the sun gets to them. Well, that's what I may do. Wink

Okay, I'll do that. I just bought some rolls of black plastic from Lowe's.
