Potato spacing in the SFG?
Hi, I can't find it in Mel's book (I have the old one), nor could I find any results by searching "potato" in the forum...
Does anyone know (or have experience with) spacing distances for potatoes in the SFG?
I'm referring to the Russet-type, not the fingerling type, if it makes any difference?
Thanks a BUNCH!
---Pam

Re: Potato spacing in the SFG?
The spacing is 4 per square. I've got 3 varieties in my SFG - red, white, and adirondack blue. All are planted 4 per square and all are looking great in my north central Texas garden.

Wow! That's really close spacing! Incredible :o
I'll have to change my plans--thought maybe one per 1' square!
Fantastic :!:
Thanks, you two

I've spaced my potatos wrong as well. I could have doubled what I have planted. Bummer. Someone told me once the potatoes start popping up that we should walk on them and smash the tops - that way the plant concentrates on it's under growth, which is the potatoes. Does anyone know if this is true? I don't want to ruin my potatos.

add more mix
add more mix up to the bottom leaves of the potato plants. They'll just keep growin all season. You may have to add some extra rungs to your box as you go, but at the end of the season you'll have a tall box full of spuds.
