I saw that you can plant 8 a square. How to I use a trellis for them?

My trellis is outside the box. Last year I took small branches of a tree and made a bridge from the front of the square back over the edge to the to bottom of the trellis. Peas put out tendrils that will catch on anything even the tulle I use for bug protection, but breaking the tendrils and redirecting the plant is ok. Once they get headed in the right direction they will catch on each other and the twigs and trellis and go to town.

Kay, does that make for a very full trellis? Are the peas difficult to find? And do they crowd the other things growing up the trellis? My husband worries that peas will do all those things. I'd love to have someone's experience on this to share with him. (He grew up with a row-garden in his back yard.)

I am trying to figure out what to do for peas and toms. Because of poor planning I will probably have to take my hoops down ....... hehe. next year I will do it right.

I use a net trellis that can be reused again and again if you tie it to posts on either side of the row.

Here's my 2nd seeding or sugar snaps in this box with the earlier one in the box behind it. They grow 6-7 feet tall easily. I take the trellis down in the fall and put it back up in the spring in another box.

I am thinking of using green stakes like those with a wire top and bottom I want to try string both the peas and tomatoes.

@kbb....That's what I do. One year I trellis the peas and beans, the following year I string the tomatoes between the tall fence posts so they are rotated. The wire that's strung from post to post along the bottom is a permanent fixture and does not interfere with the peas and beans in the off year.

QB where do you get the nylon mesh material. That is what I needed when I made my string trellis for beans

@pepper........I got mine at a local Blue Seal Feed and Grain store. Last year it was in the $5-$6 range for 5 ft by 15 ft so enuf for 3 beds since I start the netting about a foot up from the bottom. This year I found bird netting ($9.99) there to cover my dwarf cherry tree this year. I don't want the birds to eat the cherries before I can pick them like they did last year. Those feed and grain stores are marvelous.

I mulch with straw so get my bales of straw at the same place for around $8 a bale last year. It'll probably go up this year like everything else.

These pea trellises are great! I'm working on a real tomato trellis (SFG style). I'm going to take my old tomato cages, flip them upside down, and let the peas climb those. It's not perfect, but it's virtually no work and it doesn't seem they need much support.

Wow Pepper, that's some setup you came up with! Shocked

I found netting like QB has at Home Depot, but in a smaller size. It's 5'x8', supposedly, but it was just wide enough on the 5' direction to string between the conduit of our 4' boxes. We strung it over the conduit to see how much we'd need of the 8' length, and had about 2' left at the top which we cut off and will probably use to support some of our tomatoes using the leftover 4' pieces of conduit.
