Garden Frogs
Well, not really a pest I suppose. I little group of tree frogs have moved into a couple of my gardens. Will they do any damage? Or can I just let them be?

Re: Garden Frogs
Frogs usually just eat insects and things like that. I never heard of them eating crops.

Good garden neighbors! They are a good sign of environmental health!
HERE is another gardener blogging about frogs in the garden.

Re: Garden Frogs
Good to know that my hot tub is a healthy environment. That's where I usually find them - but seems some like hanging out under the cabbages.
I hadn't heard of frogs eating plants...but I wasn't sure if they would smash up the place.

Re: Garden Frogs
Are they green and slimy or brown and warty?
We have a ton of toads around here (they're brown & warty)...little lizards, too...and I LOVE IT!!!! They mostly eat the bugs we don't want, though they'll occasionally eat a bug we gardeners consider our friends. Before you harvest your cabbages, put out some shaded toad abodes so they can move to another home within the garden. Homemade abodes are easy to make with an old pot.
That's a shame some of them end up in the hot tub. We've found toad carcasses in the strangest places at times.

Re: Garden Frogs
Well...they're green and brown, but most of them are green. I just found them in my compost too. They sure do like my yard. Surprisingly, none have died in the hot tub. They just like to crawl under the cover and hang around. Which just about gives me a heart attack every time I pull it back and they all start jumping around.

Oh wow! That would give you a heart-attack, wouldn't it? So are they slimy, or dry and warty? The color rules aren't strict, just a general rule. The slime thing is another general rule.

Re: Garden Frogs
It does every time! Even though I know they're there and have been for a few years. You would think I would get used to it, right?
They are pacific tree frogs and look like this:

Re: Garden Frogs
Oh man, those are neat! They can change colors!
Funny, I don't remember ever seeing those when I lived in Seattle, but it says that's part of their range. Well, I lived there between 12-18 years of age, and was pretty oblivious to things most of the time. Don't remember them in Spokane during my early years, either, but they may not range that far inland and I don't rememer much before age 13. I wonder if they're the kind I used to catch at the pond in Port Angeles, when we visited my grandparents?

Re: Garden Frogs
I LOVE having the tree frogs hanging around... love their song in the evenings, and their appetites all the time.
We have several of the red legged frogs that are on the verge of being a threatened species that live in and around our koi pond. Those are fun.
I found an Oregon newt in the compost pile last week... I hope it's the one we found a couple of years ago out front that got loose in the greenhouse while we were relocating the koi pond.

Re: Garden Frogs
How cool that you have frogs and newts on your property. You can help conserve the little threatened frogs, and they can help you by eating bugs in your garden. Do they lay eggs in your pond?
