Potato planting in my Raised Bed is not producing a good harvest. This year I used mushroom soil and my results were not very good. I am going to try horse manure next year. I will mix it in before heading south for the winter. Anyone care to comment?

Country stepping, are you mixing a blend of different composts and raising the potato beds? I have have a very good potato year doing that so I am just curious! Better luck to you next time though!

The first year I used "store-bought" compost plus vermiculate & peat moss. Yield was not particularly good. Then I tried adding mushroom soil and the results were about the same. All other beds received the same treatment and the harvest from them was good. I am going to use horse manure this time. I will add it to the beds and let it "simmer" during the winter. Any info concerning this concept will be greatly appreciated !!!

The manure should help, next time you plant them when you dig out the hole cover the bottom with straight compost then cover them with straight compost, after that when you continue to cover them use your Mel's mix. That should help out your tuber production! You should look into starting your own compost pile too, that way you don't have to bother buying store bought "compost" ever again, a lot of them have more fillers than compost so you always want to check into them before you buy!

I just lifted my 16 pounds of potatoes out of 6 square feet. Mixed results, I should have had more, the reds were a total failure, got nothing. The Yukon golds saved the day. I did have some scab, but it wasn't too bad. Looking forward to next season I found this site about chitting.
