Bunny Problems

Where I live there is a place that the school system has for kids ages 0-5 years of age to go and play/ learn for free. About 2 years ago they added an outside area for the kids. Stuff to climb on, a deck to dance/ play on, and gardens to help water and grow vegetables in. Nothing major great it just a something. The things they grow are carrots, radishes, and tomatoes. Well last year some bunnies moves in under the deck and decimated the gardens. The kids tried to grow pole beans up these teepee shapes trellis leaving on side open so that they kids could go play inside them. So my question is what can I suggest that they do to help protect the gardens so the bunnies do not eat the plants. Has to be safe for kids and they can not get rid of the bunnies. Are these wild rabbits or feral types? It's probably not good to have either type in the play zone like that, and they probably ought to capture them, and release them in a more appropriate place...then they should build a better fence that will keep the rabbits out.

The rabbits came from the open field that is right outside the fence. The bunnies do not come out from under the deck when the kids are outside playing. The thing is they don't have the funding to put up a better gate for the play area to keep the bunnies out even if they were able to get rid of the bunnies under the fence more live in the field. I just wanted to see if there was something that they could do to help pevent the bunnies from eating the kid's plants. My son personally started seeds 4 different times last year, peas and beans, to grow and the bunnies got them before the plant could product their second set of true leave.

I have a rabbit repellant that I periodically sprinkle around the plants that the rabbits love(tulips and pansies) and it really works. It's awesome stuff. It's safe to use around food crops too. I forget what the name of it is but tomorrow, I can check the bottle that's in my garden shed and I'll let you know.

It really does work.

Sorry, I should've thought about the issue of funding. It's a major problem here, too, and my Autistic son didn't get enough summer school last summer because of funding cutbacks. Look for that repellent Too Tall Tomatoes mentioned. What I suggested was because I worry about having wild animals in a place small children play, as one could have rabies and uncharacteristically come out to harm a little one. There was a rabid fox that bit a student at my husband's college a year ago, which is why I worry.

I just checked....

It's "Liquid Fence Deer and Rabbit Repellent". I got the granular form of that product. You periodically sprinkle it around your plants and it keeps the rabbits away. You have to reapply it every few weeks or after a heavy rain. It works. What a Face

I have some of that ! I might just have to use it this year now I will have tasty veggies and a rabbit family that likes my flower beds for nesting.
