Re: Okra questions
I see. Still, the virtues of pollination sound generally applicable.

Re: Okra questions
Georgia Extension seems to think that bees (or insects) are necessary. Hummingbirds also visit okra, so maybe they help.

Re: Okra questions
I'm glad that is not an absolute, although bees would be nice. No bees or other pollinators, just tapping when there is a flower open. Okra on salad plate:

Do people use it for anything besides gumbo?

Re: Okra questions
Fried okra, boiled okra, baked okra, . . . Sounds like Forest Gump and 'shrimp'. I am supposed to coat and fry these for DH. Stalling, stalling . . .
Re: Okra questions
Fried okra coated in corn meal mix. Everybody in the south eats it but me. Being a Navy Brat I was raised up and down the east and west coast by a California raised mom. So I am not completely indoctrinated into southern cooking but some of it is pretty good. Never had fresh vegetables until I married a southern boy. Thought mashed potatoes came out of a box.
Congrats Sanderson on your harvest.

Re: Okra questions
Just remember that large okra gets "woody." You can actually HEAR the difference when you cut it. If it's hard to cut or sounds strange, put it aside. It will NOT soften with cooking. Even in gumbo.
Re: Okra questions
So it has been said on this Forum. I won't cook the largest ones, just there for the photo.
Re: Okra questions
His okra bush did look like something else at first glance. I hope this link works:
