It was a raining a bit today but not enough to stop an hardcore Oregonian like myself from getting of work in outside.

Ok finally got the grid put in. I used a some furniture nails and some green garden twine...

Later I plan on switching out the twine for something nicer looking and sturdier....perhaps copper wire...but this will work for now.

Ater that I finally planted my Yukon Golds, Water Melon Radishes, Chioggia Beets, Early Frosty Peas, Iceberg Lettuce (I hate this lettuce with a passion but had to plant it anyway because people wanted it and I forgot to order Boston Bib or Butter Crunch from my seed catalogs as a replacement... No..sigh), Shallots, and some Dragon Carrots.

Since there was a minor disaster with the seedling starts I had planned for I simply sowed the seeds directly in the soil the old fashioned way as I was growing kinda impatient and wanted to get something growing in the new bed. Will see how it turns out.

After that I fortified the bed with some hardware cloth the keep the cats (and boy do we have a lot of them here at the complex) from using my bed as a litter box.

The hardware cloth is not laying directly on top of the soil but is instead "floating" on the top of the bed and is resting on the wooden edges of the bed.

I did not fill up all to way to the top of the beds and left a couple inches on the top for exactly this purpose as the cats really don't like walking on the hardware cloth as it is uncomfortable on their paws and it prevents them from digging in the bed.

I have also found it also lets enough light through that it will not effect the germination of the seeds.

Now if only I could find something that would keep my second biggest "pest" out of my garden next to the cats......children.

Perhaps some glue traps would be effective? tongue
