Help the biting flies are after me
I don't know what kind they are but they look like house flies and man the hurt when they bite, tenacious little . Any sugestions no manure around I think the are coming from the neighbors back yard where he keeps his dog. I know they need poo and water to breed and they sure can find water at my place with the buckets, bird bath and all.

Re: Help the biting flies are after me
If you are attacked only during certain times of the year it could be deer or horse flies, these nasty insects really hurt and are after your blood. They can transmit diseases. They are attracted to movement, shiny objects, dark blue jeans, carbon dioxide from cars and will bump and attack car windows. There is about a 2 week period in the summer where I hardly go outside.

Re: Help the biting flies are after me
If I go anywhere where I would be exposed to a lot of flies, gnats, or mosquitos, I always have some cigars. I don't inhale deeply, just fill my mouth up with smoke and blow it around my face. You can also use cigarettes. Since you don't inhale deeply, there's less of a chance of becoming addicted.
Seriously, it works like a charm.

Deer Flies look like a house fly where a horse fly is usely bigger
DEER FLIES and HORSE FLIES (Tabanidae)
Deer flies are one of the few types of flies that transmit disease to people in the United States. Tularemia, also known as “rabbit fever,” is a bacterial disease that can be acquired from contact with objects or infected animals, from the bites of ticks and, occasionally, from the bites of the deer fly, Chrysops discalis.

That picture is just too much for the brain!
Sorry about your fly problem Shannon. I've figured out that TTT's cigar solution works on mosquitoes, so it makes sense that it would work on deer flies too. Not sure what else would help, but if I were you I'd be looking up options on deer fly repellants! Those bites hurt!

Would a cigarette-smoking llama be ok?

yes the flies have gone. Thanks to doneal I see they were black flies and no wonder since we have a perfect habitat near by.
