Preparing 4 square for spring planting

I started today turning over the compost in my 4 square boxes and was amazed to see how root bound the bottom half of the compost was. I literally had to pull out the meshed roots to loosen up the soil. The bottom is covered with landscaping fabric. I was really surprised that the vegetables that I planted last year would accumulate so many roots. No wonder my fall plantings didn't do well! Suggestions for this year?
