Hello! I am new to this forum and new to SFG. I just moved to France and am in St Seurin de Cadourne - a small village near Bordeaux (about an hour from there). I am starting my first SFG and need to know if anyone knows how and where to get vermiculite in this area! I have started to look and so far can't find any of the garden shops that have it or will order it. Anyone in France know a place to get it? al b

Hi, Al -- I apologize -- I *thought* I'd replied to your post, but apparently it's slipped away into the ether!

I'm La Fee, and I'm the Regional Host for Europe -- I'm just outside of Paris in the Seine-et-Marne -- but am quite familiar with the southwest region.

I've found vermiculite at Leroy Merlin -- they sell a 100-litre bag for 10,95E -- but you'll find it stacked with the insulation materials, and not anywhere near the garden department.

Good luck -- we'll look forward to hearing more from you!

Dear LaFee, thank you very much. I used the sources recommended by another respondent, and I have found it at Castorama in Bordeaux for 12,05. I will get it there on Tuesday and start planting when I get the rest of the peat moss I need on thursday! Thank you very much and I am excited. I will keep you posted on how I do. I am starting with 2 boxes - one 4X4x6" and one 4X4X12" for lots of carrots that I will juice. al b

Hi, Al -- are you using the tourbe blonde?

the shops here all stock huge bags of the stuff, but I'm wondering if it's the right type of peat -- I think it is (actually, I think it's sphagnum, rather than actual peat, because of the sustainability issues) but I'm not 100% sure.

Yes, I have 2, 70L bags of turbe blonde - I will check it out - I noted in the SFG book, there is "sphagnum peat moss" and also "Peat." I will check into these and if there is a problem, I can get my next 2 bags of plain peat. I think, based on the lack of differentiation in the book - it should be fine. I am looking at the photos now. Mel has on page 90 and 91, 3 different brands - 4 bags - 3 say sphagnum peat moss and one says "Reed-Sedge Peat". I will look at the definitions of turbe blonde and ensure that they are what is shown. I need 2 more bags which come in Thursday to the shop near where I am. Thanks very much for your help - much appreciated! al b

According to Wikipedia, "moss peat" is the same as "Sphagnum" peat. Here is a quote from the article on Wikipedia: "Decayed, compacted Sphagnum moss has the name of peat or peat moss. This is used as a soil additive which increases the soil's capacity to hold water and nutrients by increasing capillary forces and cation exchange capacity (CEC).". The url of the full article is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sphagnum
