Pea Problem

A very good question was asked by ckernsgarden, that we haven't found an answer for yet, so I thought we could keep trying:

I'm not so sure soil splash is the complete answer. I have a similar problem with my peas. But here is the odd part, 3 out of the four plants have sent up new growth and is now big enough to reach for support with their vines, and there is no browning of the leaves on any of the new growth. Oh and all four plants were transplants.

Grid, if it is so simple, why didn't you just state what you think it is instead of a one-liner and then expecting folks to come back and ask you? You may have some knowledge and experience in SFG, but you apparently dont' know how to deliver that knowledge in a reasonable or polite way. Not meaning to offend you here--hope that perhaps you might learn to play well with others.

As to the pea problem, I have no earthly idea, but two of mine show the same symptoms (out of 42 plants). I doubt it is spash up as they are all watered the same way. I think some things just fall under "that is the way it is". As long as it is only one or two affected, I wouldn't be concerned.

Thanks for that Bof. I too disagreed with Gridgardner's assessment that it was soil splash, but I wasn't going to get into it with him. however I am not sure what the yellowing symptoms indicate. I'm jumping on the 'it is what it is' bandwagon; sometimes our peas just poop out. tee hee

I too have had similar symptoms with no other apparent problems. It's one of those things I'm willing to live with, without knowing the cause.

Soil splash would be odd considering that Mel's Mix has no soil in it. Some things that make you go hmmmm.

We took an Easter break from the computer and have been surprised at the latest happenings. A big THANK YOU to all who offered helpful advice and links. You are the ones who make this a great place to get SFG information.

Here's what I've learned from posting a couple of topics:
1) Square Foot Gardeners absolutely LOVE this method of gardening
2) Most forum "posters" are informative and helpful and want everyone to have a successful gardening experience
3) New SFGers would be wise to check the boards regularly
4) Some tasks of Forum Moderators are unpleasant, especially those duties that keep it a positive place for everyone

About the actual peas... they look about the same. That picture was the worst one but it isn't dying. The same peas in the other box are about twice as big so we'll take a wait and see approach while being very careful about watering.

The smartest thing we've done since Day 1 is to keep a journal, on green paper, of course. We write down planting dates, seed type, box layout, weather, frost dates, etc. a few times per week. We hope this helps to see which varieties of the same veggies do the best for our situation. We are also looking forward to harvest so we can taste which ones we prefer as well. (grin)
