Haven't talked much about it to DH, but I'd REALLY like to get rid of the grass in my garden area.... Not only would it make things neater, easier, & quicker, but I could get the lawnmower out of my shed! Room for more STUFF!
While at the Preparedness Fair yesterday, I saw that the county recycling office was right across the street. And they had a couple of HUGE piles of mulch! Just talked to them & I can come up any sunny M-F to get all I want for free!
I'm going to start at the bottom & work my way up the hill.......
( Let's see - need to call mom to save all her boxes for the cardboard... I've got plenty of newspaper..... )

Hit the furniture stores and see if you get any mattress boxes.

Other great ideas....
Why do I suspect DH is going to (once AGAIN) be unhappy with me for a while....?

glad to see the topic of grass and weed killer.....with lots of newspaper about 15 sheets or more and topped with cardboard......It has worked great for me......someone in Washington wrote this on line....years ago....thats how I heard about it.......Ruth

Re: Score!
I HATE using weedkiller, but have used it in the past. Would prefer to avoid it altogether... So, yes, newspaper, cardboard, & lots of mulch!
SCORE
Yes.......I use white vinegar......I understand Costco has the best price....and larger bottles....I get mine at Walmart........
I had a battery operated sprayer that worked very good for awhile but than it stopped working so I dont know if leaving the vinegar in it when not in use made it die....it was not the batteries.....
I highly recommend the newspapers and cardboard......have done it with chips on top also

Grats, Marie! Free is my favorite price, and well within my budget.

Re: Score!
How cool is that? Your own private source (okay, you might have to share it with a few other people!) Thicker layers of newspaper do a better job of suffocating the grass than cardboard as the cardboard allows pockets of air if the ground isn't totally flat. However, combining the two would seem to be perfect.
Put your time into spreading a thick under layer and you'll be greatly rewarded in the long run.
If you have bermuda grass, I have heard this in several places and videos. Actually fertilize grass before putting down the thick layers of paper and wood chips or mulch. For some reason it stimulates its growth and that will actually serve to kill it once it's buried. Sounds backwards, but people swear by it!

( I've recently picked up two adult cycle boxes and custom made two small boxes from them to send heavy things by carrier )

Re: Score!
I've had great luck getting tons of boxes from the dollar store. They go through them really fast and don't care if I take them off their hands.
