Seedling Identification Empty Seedling Identification

Post  OhioGardener 4/18/2024, 6:39 pm

Can anyone identify what type of seed and/or seedling this is? This seed sprouted in some compost that was made mostly from juice bar pulp, so I assume it must be some type of fruit, maybe a tropical fruit of some kind. But, I am curious what it might be.

Seedling Identification Empty Bing and Google

Post  markqz 4/18/2024, 11:14 pm

Did you know that you can use Google and/or Bing to search for images as well as text?

I fed one of your pictures into each of those. This one was pretty close:

Maybe citrus?

Having a citrus seed in there would make a lot of sense.

The second possibility would be some type of legume. The only legume that might reasonably be in a fruit bar drink is a peanut. But where would they have gotten unroasted peanuts?

This is the image of legumes (called ground nuts, but I think that's another name for peanuts)

Ground nuts

You can try the searches yourself and see if anything looks more likely to you.

Seedling Identification Empty Mystery Seedling

Post  SMEDLEY BUTLER 4/21/2024, 12:47 am

Just out of curiosity, I would replant it into a container and just see what it looks like as it grows. You never know what it may become. I've done it a bunch of times and it's always something that you're not expecting. At least it has been for me.

Seedling Identification Empty Re: Seedling Identification

The leaves remind me of a prunus family plant sprouting. So peach? Cherry? Plum? They have a dark seed coat like that and it obviously must have had to escape its seed shell. I would try to grow it just out of curiosity and identify it later with Picture This or another good plant ID app.
