Mini greenhouse? Good or bad? Empty Mini greenhouse? Good or bad?

Post  gardenertaylor 4/11/2013, 5:55 pm

I'm a newbie. Last week, I covered my gardens with the protective dome made from PVC pipes and tarp to keep the cats out of my dirt until I start planting this weekend. And help the soil warm up.

Today, the temperature of the air inside the tarps is 90-95 degrees! It's only 60 outside. I guess this is a mini greenhouse?

On the one hand, I think this must be a good thing right? But, as I think it through, I'm not so sure . . . .. I plan to plant leek transplants this weekend . . . they prefer colder air? Maybe not 90s. And I plan to plant some parsnips seeds direct to soil this weekend, which I think would love the warmer air?

What to do?

Soon, I will transplant some lettuce plants and they won't want to the 90 degrees, or is it OK?

Would a few slits in the tarp to provide some ventilation provide the right balance?

Hhhhmmmmmmm . . . . am I just overthinking things? Should I just plant it all and see what happens in my toasty little greenhouses (which will cool off considerably every day as I monitor the soil moistness and water as needed . . .)

Yes, cut a few slits in the plastic. I've been advised to uncover the bed when the temps are 50+ degrees outside.

Following this method, I've overwintered beets, garlic, onions, Asian greens, some spinach, and three lettuces.

For cool-weather crops, my basic rule is to cover if the forecast is 40F or below. Summer crops probably should be covered if the expected temp is below 50F. Make that 55F to be relatively safe, allowing for forecasting errors.

Good luck!
