Mini Hoop Greenhouse Empty Mini Hoop Greenhouse

Post  CarolynPhillips 1/16/2011, 3:41 pm

We are building a regular size greenhouse for growing young seedlings in.
In addition to that, I have put together a Mini Hoop Greenhouse inside the bigger
Hoop Greenhouse for germinating seeds and for extra protection early in the
season.

I went to Home Depot and bought 10 12inch iron rods, 5 1/2 inch PVC pipe 10 feet long. I already had the poly handy. After I drove my rods in the ground , I slipped the pvc over the rod and bent it over to the other rod. Whala= Hoop.

The mini hoop germination chamber is 4 feet wide X 16 feet long and 4 feet tall.
I have 4 8ft heat mats inside it. There is Black insulation boards under the heat mats. This will grow / germinate 32 flats of seeds/seedlings.

I used 1/2inch pvc clamps to hold the poly to my 1/2 inch mini hoop

This mini hoop house will be protected from the outside weather but if one was to build one out in the open==you could frame it in with 2x4s and anchor it down.
I am just holding the poly down around the bottom edges with bricks. I have no high winds to worry about since it is inside a hoop house. We are about to put the Poly on the big Hoop house here shortly........then all is good to go.

Using a small electric heater to keep the mini house warm at night and on cloudy days.
On sunny days the poly has to be lifted to release the heat.
Also using a tarp over the mini hoop house at night to help hold in the heat. When we get another hard long freeze== I will put sleeping bags and comforter blankets over the mini house.===and since it is inside another house , I will not have to worry about wind blowing it off.
I have already placed 9 flats of seeds/seedlings inside=====im a happy camper.

If it is not too dark when we finish putting the poly on the outer hoop house (16x24), I will take another pic.

Thanks for sharing your pictures - I wonder if the pvc clamp came from the same place you got the pvc pipe? I just made a hoop house today same dimentions as your inside one - only \8 ft long - but got stuck on a convenient way to enclose the ends in an easy way to allow ventilation and watering - mine is purely outdoors and i had thought of opening up one side to water and a vent in the end, but those clamps might just work a charm - I will have to check out my local store in the morning. It will be OK for tonight since it isn't windy, but I need to secure a little better, and would rather not have so much poly bunched at the ends. Still, very hap;py with my progress today and even transplanted some kale and parsley that is still alive into the hoop to give them a boost (and clear out the rest of my gardens for replanting soon).

Happy spring planning

Eliot Coleman, the author of Winter Harvest Handbook and Four Season Harvest, uses portable hoophouses that he slides back and forth with covered rows inside, and he claims that each layer brings the zone approximately 1 1/2 zones, so the plants beneath the inner cover are effectively living in an environment 3 zones warmer that where he lives! It's a cool idea I hope to try out someday, but this is the year of the chicken, so that's the big project (along with a few more SFG beds outside Wink ).

Here's a picture from the Four Season Farms website.

Miinva, I have that book. It is very interesting but sadly I am not rich enough for greenhouses on tracks. Very Happy How I wish. Maybe one of these days.
Meanwhile--gotta do it the poor mans way.

Kiwi, I bought my clamps from a pumpkin supplier. I had to call in the order.

pvc clamps

Hollands Land O Giants
They have a lot of cool hard to find gardening accessories---sprinklers, pvc adaptors, giant pumpkin hoist, etc........ I bought the clamps a few years ago.

http://www.hollandsgiants.com

I don't think the clamps are listed on the web site but maybe you could call and see if they still offer them. 253-840-3575 They normally send out their ordering list with your order. Their order form is just 4 pages long. They also send out giant pumpkin growing information with orders. Just so ya know.
I trust the company---home operated.
I have 4 dvds from them on how to grow giant pumpkins and how they grew they giants plus scenes from the weigh-offs.

I wish I was more of a builder, because his movable greenhouses aren't anything fancy, although the example using wheels and tracks looks pretty spendy. Maybe someday Smile

The snow has stuck around for 7 days so far----a record around here. I am sure it will wash away with the rain tomorrow.

We got the poly over the greenhouse but did not finish framing the ends.
Of course one end will have a door and the other end will evenually have a window.
This spring we will construct the side curtains. I was in a hurry to get the main
structure up and operating and the side curtains are not that important right now.

The poly was attached to the greenhouse frame using Wire Lock. Wire Lock is a long strip of galvanized 2 inch track that is screwed to the greenhouse framing boards that you place the ends of the poly over and assemble a long curvy wire into the track that holds the poly in place. I should of taken pictures of that too-----maybe Tuesday cause its gonna be rainy tomorrow.
but if you enlarge the pic---you can see the Wire Lock at the base of greenhouse.
The main greenhouse will hold 12 pallet tables ---giving room for 72 flats of seedlings. The main greenhouse will also hold 75 hanging baskets.

So ridiculously impressive!!

So, we all agree that the PVC clamps won't work if exposed to high winds? They just blend in so seamlessly. I am hoping what I build will look so well-planned.

I just found something that will strengthen the hold of the snap clasps. Maybe that will help with the high winds?

www.simplifiedbuilding.com

You're looking for L GCS Grip Clip (sorry, I can't copy the link from my Nook).

Just a thought. Let me know what you think.
