Tomato suckers
Just this year I've learned the difference in tomatoes. What do you do with your suckers? I've had a few big ones and I've taken them and just stuck them in MM and they are growing great

Re: Tomato suckers
I would transplant them if I had the room, but I don't, so mine all go in the compost pile.
When late fall arrives I'm going to try to save one or two from the smaller tomato plants so I can pot them and bring them inside. Maybe I can get some fresh tomatoes in the winter this way.

Re: Tomato suckers
What a great idea. How large are the suckers that you remove for transplanting?

Gosh...I just learned you can replant the suckers...I just pruned my mators yesterday--which now look butcher to me.
Maybe I was just too prune happy. I'll know to do this next time around.

Re: Tomato suckers
I transplanted one that got away from me and was around 12 inches long. I rooted it first in some water. It's growing great, but I don't know if there will be enough time to get tomatoes from it where I live. I usually just pitch the suckers. At first, I felt sorry for them, then decided they would keep production down and my original plants would not be as strong, so off they go.

Re: Tomato suckers
I clip them off when they are just 4-5" long root them in water and plant them in 4" pots of Mel's mix after about they are big enough to transplant into the garden. When I don't have room for them all and I never do, I give them to the other gardeners in my neighborhood and gardener friends. When I put them into the garden I cut off the lowest leaves and plant them deeper than they were in the pot.
No worries April you will soon have more.
