I am thinking about growing a box of strawberries in one SFG - went to get a flat of berries today at $24 - $28! Picked my own for a lot less, but my hubby would love to plant his own. I was thinking either Tristar or Seascape. I read that Tristars should be treated as annuals in Zones 3-5??? Doesn't sound right to me strawberries - Questions about Strawberries in SFG 601593 . Do they need to be covered with straw for the winter? If so, is there another option? My hubby is very allergic to straw. I live in a city that gets and keeps a good snow pack.

Also, what is the spacing for these? 1 per square? Thanks for your help sunny

The "All New Square Foot Gardening" book indicates 4/square. However, he also recommends cutting off all runners and buying replacement plants every three or four years. So if you plan to replace all your plants that often, you could do 4/square. If you plan to let the runners produce babies, you might want to plant fewer than that and allow them to multiply on their own. This is my first year with a strawberry bed, so I don't know much myself. Just thought I'd mention what the book says. I started with bare root plants, 1/square, but didn't have great success. Only had 5 live out of 20!
