Strawberries in my SFG?
Hi everyone. My husband and I are new at this! We've just built a 4x8 planter and a trellis along the back 8 feet. We are really excited. We have our plan for when to plant what. We have a couple squares devoted to strawberries, but will that even work? I read in the book that I can put up to 4 plants in one square...will I need to support it in any way? I am pretty clueless about how a strawberry plant even grows. I saw the ideas for the pyramid boxes for strawberries, but we don't have the time or energy to build another box. We are not looking for tons of strawberries...just a few to let the kids pick and eat outside. THOUGHTS?

Re: Strawberries in my SFG?
Hi and welcome to SFG!
Strawberries are planted 4 per square as you said. They don't need any support as they are a low growing bushy sort of plant. I have a 3' x 3' section in one of my raised beds for strawberries and they do just fine. ... A strawberry plant will last 3-4 years. During that time it will send off shoots/runners that will create new plants. These can get so numerous you may need to thin them out. They can be planted elsewhere, composted, or given to neighbors.
Good luck with your garden.

Re: Strawberries in my SFG?
I had just 16 everberring type and I had a few strawberries all summer long, I would just go out in the sfg and when there was a ripe one, I picked it and ate it. I even had enough to make me a strawberry sundae!
Re: Strawberries in my SFG?
I only had a small handfull of delightly yumminess until either squirrel or ground hog happened (Im betting squirrel). My 2 year old was NOT happy a to this day (shes now three) chases squirrels and yells at them for eating her strawberries (when she was two she called them brew berries).
