Garden coaches $$$$
I was listening to CBC radio (like NPR of BBC) and they were talking about garden coaches. Vegetable growing is getting more and more popular. People in Canada are paying $3,000 to have a "garden coach" build and plant a vegetable garden for them. And about $50 a week more if they want them to take care of it.
I wish I could find the audio so you could listen to it. Sure makes Mel's Mix seem cheap!

I sincerely applaud all the folks who are able to take advantage of entrepreneurial opportunities.
On the other hand, I haven't figured out how so many (insert your adjective here) people have become wealthy enough to throw their money away.

What would be the fun in that? I, probably like most of you, am doing this because I enjoy it so much. I wouldn't want somebody else doing my gardening - that's the fun part! Now, being able to hire a gourmet chef to cook it up for me, hmmm, I'm thinking I might like that!

I wish they'd throw some of it my way!

Don't you realize that because we do do all this ourselve, we are living like Lords and Ladies.
I reckon that spending nearly $400 (don't forget tax and shipping just for local delivery) on a 4x4 with trellis and plants etc., we are making ourselves very very rich.
If you have money, then spending it on something like this is sure a heap better than so many other things. At least it benefits the people who do the work.
If I won milli0ons on the lottery, I would give everyone in my small town a couple of SFG, those who wanted one. Then it would benefit the recipients and the local people who would make and plant these raised beds. Just a dream.
But it is much more fun doing it onself.

Wow. I could not figure out what a garden coach would be....I was expecting Cinderella.
A fool and his money....(which isn't fair. If someone enjoys having a garden coach, then God love 'em, let 'em have a garden coach.)

Limited mobility people would love to have somebody set up the beds, but I can't get my mind around the "tending the garden for you" I like putzing in my gardens. Although, when things go wrong, a garden coach coming out to check it out could be helpful. Or do like the rest of us, post it on the forum and get more than one garden coach.

I think also we know that gardening is a skill that can be learned but not everyone has the confidence to try to learn.

Re: Garden coaches $$$$
after i came across the web site where this company sells you a complete kit ie: raised bed, soil, seeds, trellis the total package for a 4X8 bed was around $2,400 and that didnt include shipping or setting it up that was extra and they didnt tend it for you. i can see why some of us would rather do it ourselfs an save the money for other things. but in some ways i cant fault them for tryin ta make money either. on the hand i can see highway robbery i'm not blind.

Thought this was a recreational vehicle with a garden in it
As far as the concept goes ..... can't point fingers. I made some decent cash in the past by designing, setting-up and maintaining folks Koi ponds and aquariums. I also had clients who paid me to select/stock their fish too.
I never quite understood why someone would pay me to do that .... paying me, to do the most enjoyable part of the hobby?? I dunno

If it creates a job that keeps one family fed and another family happy to have a *garden-koi pond-greenhouse-or whatever* then I'm all for it. The economic cycle is well. Supply and demand.
I think lack of confidence and lack of skills is part of it.

Re: Garden coaches $$$$
I find it extremely amusing to think that someone would hire another
person to be their 'garden coach'. Perhaps I take for granted my
upbringing and my ancestors' closeness to the land. Our very existence
depended on it and it is almost second nature to me. But not everyone
has had the luxury of being raised dirt poor so they have missed out on
some wonderful life lessons.
City Farm Boy in Vancouver, BC does urban farming too. This is an awesome idea and I was actually thinking of trying something like that myself here in my town, perhaps when I retire. A lot of the people just have lots of yard space that is nothing but lawn which is a poor use of the yard. Boring too, in my opinion.
Here's a link to his site. He does SFG as well as traditional gardens. And his garden boxes are beautiful....finger jointed cedar. http://www.cityfarmboy.com/index-2.html

Gwynn, just to put a bug in your ear, you can start writing a book of your experiences, make it a pdf format, and sell them online.
