Mel's Mix
Apparently you can't get Mel's Mix in Western North Carolina either. I even talked with the district manager of the garden department of Home Depot last weekend (he just happened to ask if he could help me) and he was not even aware of the product. Hmmm. So, I'm back to going store-to-store all over town trying to get my ingredients. Bummer.

Re: Mel's Mix...
Down here in Virginia we have Southern States Farm Supply stores. I recently put together one 4x4 box and ended up buying everything I needed in one place.
$23 for each bag of Vermiculite (coarse) $3 for each bag of compost (forgot to check if it said 5 different sources) and $10 for 3.8 cu ft of Peat Moss. So that's enough "stuff" for two boxes or around $40 per box.
A bit expensive?? maybe but of course if all I need to do in the future is add $3 bucks of compost each year then I think it will work out in the long run.
To convert my entire garden space will be pricey.

Re: Mel's Mix...
I don't know enough about the pre-mixed "Mix" yet. This is my first year at SFG and I was unable to find enough of the right kinds of compost, so yes, I did have to supplement. (And I need to soil test and supplement again, I'm sure.) But I did get the vermiculite and the peat. It was an investment, but I do feel it was worth it.
$23 is about what I paid for my vermiculite, though I messed up and got fine instead. (I asked for vermiculite and failed to specify what grade, so it's my fault.)
Happy, I am using Southern States also. Just found them this year, but I really like them!

Re: Mel's Mix...
I paid $42
(did they see me coming or what?) for what I was told was a 4 cu ft bag of vermiculite, then found out (after it was open and partialy used) that it was 3.2 cu ft. I must live in the wrong area, because I could only find one place that had vermiculite unless I wanted to go for the teeny tiny bags.
Oh, I love the Oregon Coast for everything except growing a garden.
