Checking in from Vancouver, BC! Been SFG'g since 2009 but still consider myself a newbie. I have a little 4x12 grid in my backyard to grow organic vegetables.

So far my successes include: carrots, mizuna, spinach, shiso, shelling peas, potatoes
My failures: Lovely beet greens but undeveloped roots, cilantro, celery, strawberries that are eaten before I get to them

Greetings! Laughing

Vancouver BC Says Hi! 396615 Karen,
I once was in Vancover to catch the boat back to AK. I was so young I don't realy remember the city. Glad you found us. Hope you ate your lovely beet greens in which case not realy a failure. Lots of folks from your neck of the woods around here. I love the sence of humor the posters have. They make my days brighter and are full of great advice as well.

Vancouver BC Says Hi! 396615 from me too. I'm still in the construction phase. Just ask any questions you have and chip in with what you know about, it's a friendly place. There was recent thread on growing beet and people here like to see pics btw Smile

Vancouver BC Says Hi! 396615 Vancouver BC Says Hi! 396615 YES!! Another one from BC! It is great to have you join us. I am just up the road a piece from you....on Hwy. 97 in Prince George. ( Heading down there this weekend to visit kids and grandkids. Woohoo! ) We have a few others on here from BC as well. I am the Regional Host for Canada. Vancouver BC Says Hi! 445227 Vancouver BC Says Hi! 445227

I had trouble with beets last year too. My cilantro did okay but bolted while I was away on vacation so didn't get to use much of it. What gets your strawberries.....birds or slugs? I have to go some to keep ahead of little teeny slugs.

It is amazing how good home grown veggies taste. No matter what size the garden is they just taste soooooo yummy.

Thanks for joining us. Please hang out with us and join in whenever you can. It is always nice to have another person with SFG experience on board.

Thanks Shannon1, Barkie, and OldHippie for the welcome! Shannon1, I did eat my beet greens, but they were pretty tough by the time I gave up on the roots ever growing bigger.

Barkie, thanks for the heads up on the beet thread. I'm too cheap to have my soil tested for pH, so that's that. I guess I'll just have to experiment and buy my own beets until I'm successful.

OldHippie, hello there Prince George resident Canada Regional Host! That's great that you're so active on the board. My strawberries had mysterious bites taken out of them, the minute they turned reddish. Not sure who the culprit is, but they must not have tasted that good, or the whole strawberry would be eaten!

Vancouver BC Says Hi! 654548 Karen

Nice to have you join the forum. This is a great group of people who will try to help you if you have questions.
Because of your experience, we sure are glad you are here.

Unfortunately, lots of critters love to take bites from strawberries. Could be slugs, chipmunks or even rabbits. What critters are in your area?

Please keep us updated on this year's progress and share pictures, cause we I love you them.
