Re: Strawberries planted in Strawberry "Jar"
I have grown strawberries and flowers in these kind of containers. To ensure drainage in the center, I saw this trick on a gardening show. Use an old paper towel roll in the center. Fill the roll with gravel or whatever. Fill the dirt in around the outside of the roll. Then you can pull the roll out and the dirt and gravel will stay in their respective places. But I guess if you're using Mel's Mix, you'd better make sure it's already wet and packed in there pretty good. It's so light and fluffy, the gravel might not stay.

A pvc pipe with holes drilled in it allows water to get all the way down to the bottom without running out the side pockets. I have one with herbs in it. I don't think it is the most efficient way, but I just like the looks

I'm old, but what I used to do is similar. I made a cylinder of wire mesh fabric rolled tightly around pre moistened sphagnum moss. (pre moistened means soaked overnight) Like most ceramic pots, I covered the drain hole with broken pottery. Then the wet cylinder was set over the drain hole/broken pottery. I filled the jar to the first level of openings. A young plant was added to the cup from the inside, turned so the leaves pointed up, roots fanned out. (repeat for all openings on that level)
Then I added soil to the next level of openings and planted the next layer of strawberries. I finish with one or two starts on top. The important part is to keep the sphagnum moss damp, but as long as the soil mix does not turn to dust the sphagnum moss won't either. Only put water and fertilizer into the moss cylinder. It evenly waters the berries top and bottom.
Deborah...be careful to not over expose or bury the crown (as always when planting strawberries)
