Update SFG Layout

Gotta replace the sprouts with something, any ideas? (I don't want flowers inside the bed.)

I am not much of a planner when it comes to vines and climbers. But, I would think the zukes and squashes would go on the north, too, if you plan to go vertical with them? Seems things getting tall on both sides would really shade the middle two rows. If you plan to let them sprawl, you may be fine, however.

And, I would also move my peppers down with the mustard greens up with the other peppers in row two. The onions and beans could be moved down to row 3.

I tend to layer my plantings when I need to from tallest to shortest. But, that's the landscaper in me coming out. Right now, I only have low growers in my 4x12. I have climbers going in a separate, dedicated bed. It was easier to picture for me, personally.

I would love to come over for dinner sometime, though. You have a great diversity in your upcoming harvest.....deeelish. Update SFG Layout 211713

So I made some adjustments, trying to keep in mind the landscaping and arranging the garden from tallest to shortest. It is my understanding that most summer squash are bush varieties. The crookneck squash and zucchini I am planting are bushy. Now the question is will the squash overshade my lettuce, onions, and cabbage? Also, last year cabbage worms destroyed my cabbages, and ideas on how to organically take care of this before a problem arises? And finally, how many green pea plants can a plant per square foot? And is it too late to plant them now?

The updated plan looks great to me. Peas can go 9 to a square. I plant them 8 to a square just to give them a little extra room.

For the cabbage worms your best bet is going to be to use BT to kill them, but you probably want to wait until they show up. BT will kill them very quickly, so they won't have a chance to do much damage.

Looks great! Are you going to have something for your Okra to climb? I think those can get pretty tall.

Thanks, and no I do not hav anything for them to climb. I was told they can get tall, but I didn't realize I would need anything. Do you have any suggestions?

Am curious about what BT is also. Last year I had cabbage worms. I'm going organic this year, as much as I can

BT is Bacillus Thuringiensis. Now, aren't you glad you asked, Laughing

? LOL! It's a biological control that is "selectively toxic to many moth and butterfly larvae" (caterpillars). "Google" it and you should find plenty of sites with more information on it.

I'm a southern girl who loves my okra and have had it in every conventional garden I've ever planted (yea, all 2 of them). The plants get pretty big. But they don't need staking in a conventional type garden. I'm not sure about with Mel's Mix - it is so loose and friable that they could possibly need some support.

I'm not planning on having any okra in my sfg while I just have the two boxes. I've found it takes at least a half dozen plants to feed my family of 5, so if I ever do grow them in my sfg, it'll be after I have more boxes. Might even consider doing a thinner, longer box for them - something like I've seen some folks do for tomatoes and other larger plants.
