I've started on the flower SFG
Last fall my mom decided to give me the job of changing her flower garden into SFGs. I have to dig up the perennials that are growing and put them into SFGs. I worked on it over the weekend and put in a 4 X 8 SFG and then put the perennials in it, I still have lots to do and may not get it all done this year. I'll post pictures to show what it looks like as I change it and when the flowers start to bloom we can see how it all looks.

Re: I've started on the flower SFG
Josh, what is that purple/red/pinkish flower in the first picture. The blossoms look like really big bleeding hearts, but the foliage is not similar to bleeding hearts at all.

Is it a fern-leaf bleeding heart?

Re: I've started on the flower SFG
My mom picked that up new, it's called Burning Hearts Bleeding Hearts-Dicentra Burning Hearts
My Dad ordered lumber for at least 3 more 4x8 SFGs for the flower garden, I might do one with stacked layers.

Thanks for the info. I love bleeding hearts and that one is just so different. I may look for one next year, too many things working for the veggie garden this year.

Josh! That Bleeding Heart is gorgeous! Mine isn't nearly that far along yet. It is one of my most favorite spring flowers. Can't wait to see how this develops!

Here's my latest update on the flower SFGs.

added one with a basket in the middle of it

There is still a lot of stuff to do, have to mulch around the SFGs and move some more things around. I'll keep you posted as how well its coming along.

Illinois wild flowers

Here is another addition to the Flower SFGs, a small raised 2x2. The legs are from a metal stand, and it has wheels.

Josh,
The wishing well and basket planters are absolutely gorgeous. Where did you get those? Are they made out of wood?

I love the native flowers! I have several volunteer columbine in my yard and I just love them. They aren't growing in very convenient areas, but I will not disturb them.

Re: I've started on the flower SFG
Lindacol,
They are made from wood. A friend made them for my mom. The basket is made from landscape timbers, and the wishing well is made from 2x4s. The idea of adding them to the sfgs was to give them a place to be where they were not in the way of having to mow around.
The latest update on the flower SFG:
We added mulch around the gardens. The plants are all doing really good.

On the left hand side of the picture the walk leads to a arbor, there is a bench inside where you can sit down.
My dad brought home a round glass plate that went to an old industrial weigh scale, it has a Dept. of Agriculture sticker on the glass dated 1969.
My mom wanted my dad to make it a window for the arbor.

From inside looking out you get a nice view of the SFG flower gardens.

I would keep an eye on that window, if Boffer doesn't come grab it, I just might.
Re: I've started on the flower SFG
Fabulous transformation in the garden Josh!! It looks great! Hey... only 35 days (or there abouts) left of school and then you are FREE!!!

Re: I've started on the flower SFG
The garden is looking really smart and floriferous as well as practical. Nice window as well.

trellis with a view
My dad made this for my mom over the weekend, she had 3 old windows and decided she wanted a trellis with a view, so my dad made it for her.

Re: I've started on the flower SFG
My DIL and I dug up her pi r squared flower bed today and added some different compost and some vermiculite. We had made it out of peat and compost last summer and it did well, but we are hoping for spectacular this year.
Tomorrow we are going to dig up the front flower bed and add some compost and vermiculite. Not real mels mix as the ratios will be off, but better than the sand and compost that's there now.
