Hubby removed all the MM from our deep box yesterday to add hardware cloth to the bottom (vole deterrent, we hope). He brought this big "thing" in to me. I'd never seen anything like it, but from looking at our bug book it appears to be a pupa stage of the European corn borer, although they didn't seem to be as large as this one. Does anyone know for sure? It was damp and moving slowly. Yuck.

I'll probably put it on the shelf of the bird feeder and see if any bird wants to have a quick snack.

I would squish it and not run the risk of the thing hatching in my garden. I googled "sphynx moth" and found this:

Sphingidae is a family of moths (Lepidoptera),
commonly known as hawk moths, sphinx moths and hornworms, that includes
about 1,200 species (Grimaldi & Engel, 2005). It is best
represented in the tropics
but there are species in every region (Scoble, 1995). They are moderate
to large in size and are distinguished among moths for their rapid,
sustained flying ability (Scoble, 1995). The narrow wings and
streamlined abdomen are adaptations for rapid flight.

There is no way I would take the chance of a hornworm hatching in my garden.

KILL it!!! Do not just throw it away!! It is an alien species that will come back while you sleep and either take over your body or at the very least, wipe out your crops if you take you eye off it for even a second. Haven't you seen "Body Snatcher"????????????

If you lived in a suburb, I would say to lay it in the street and slow down that traffic threatening small kids.....kind of a double whammy.

I'd be afraid to hit it over the head with a shovel....it may hit me back.

Poor Sphinx Moths.... they're so beautiful! I don't like hornworms, but this year I'm going to have a couple of sacrificial plants where I'll put them if they get into the tomatoes I want.

How do you plan to keep the hornworms on those two plants and not on any of the others? Shocked

THANKS A BUNCH, I am just now at 44 recovering from nightmares of the old one with Donald Sutherland in it. My dad drug me to see that, I stayed out of the yard for months. Watermelons terrified me, of course my dad feed on that fear, dragging them home telling me not to go to sleep.

I found something like that too, in my compost! I set it down on top of the compost pile and forgot about it, and when I came back two days later it was broken in half and hollow... whatever it was, I let it loose upon my neighborhood!
