I am a bit of a forum addict I am afraid and they usually are the garden variety ones WE are just into Spring over here and the garden is bursting into full flower

Here is CA it is spring type planting time. I will be glad to watch the southern hemisphere gardening and see how it goes. I got started too late this year for lettuce so am excited to be growing some of that now.

I dont normally bother with lettuce as they are so cheap to buy and I have snails by the 100's But I have all my tommies in and cant wait for a great crop for Xmas

Hi, and welcome to the forum. I'm from southern Missouri in the Upper South region of the US. You can see from the flag counter at the left that we currently have 57 members from Australia.

I hope all of you southern hemisphere folks will send plenty of photos of your gardens to those of us waiting out the long winter months in the north. (That goes for you warm winter US folks, too.)

You will be heading in to Spring soon! Post pictures! I am in South Dakota, in the North and Central Midwest area of the US (emphasis on NORTH!) and in just a few short months everything will be buried in white here. It will be encouraging to see that there are gardens growing somewhere!

I just joined minutes ago too, too shy to post my own topic... awww!
anyways i'm in Sydney, really loving the spot of rain we are getting today, it's certainly helping all of my plants grow a bit more (except for the baby lettuce that got munched my a snail last evening - boo hoo.) love to see everyone's gardens! will share pics of our plots soon.

A belated THe Estate from a Canadian in British Columbia.

It is getting on for five in the morning here, and I have just looked outside to see white frost on my car. Now I wonder if my lettuce have survived under my hoop house or if I will call it quits for this season. Lettuce here are not cheap. Sigh!

How long have you been lurking booberry? I understand how you feel becasue it took me the best part of a year on another forum (about elephants) before I made my first post, so by the time I found this forum I was able to feel comfortable and jumpr right in.

Hi Kelejan! I'm going to bed rather late just as you have woken up rather early. i haven't been lurking very long... literally minutes... We rarely get frost in this little patch of the world, maybe sometimes hail. We are expecting more rain here, and I'm eagerly collecting rainwater (not a very sophisticated system - just bowls and other things lined up outside!) I found this forum while surfing the net about caring for my blueberry plant. It's spring and i've only had it for three weeks yet it doesn't seem to have grown at all!

Booberry, I expect your blueberry plant is taking its time to get established, especially if you have transplanted it. Give it time to make new roots, then it should improve.

I remember watching a TV show once where the presenter said about plants, "first they sleep, then they creep, then they leap." It taught me a bit of patience.

Hi, I am a new member from northern Victoria in Australia. I spent the winter devouring Mel' B's book and systemmatically planning sewing seed indoors and ourdoors. Have had reasonable success with germination, but lebanese cucumbers germinated, grew strongly for a while and then died. Corn, planted outside has had 100% failure rate. Don't know why, but will try again. Today - Melbourne Cup Day- is traditional for planting out tomatoes which have all grown brilliantly from seed. Lettuce , parsley and zucchini are all doing well, and have melons, capsicum, beans ready to go in as well. Potatoes planted in August have had 100% germination rate. Here's hoping for a bumper season.
Has anyone tried freeze drying vegetables and, if so, how did you do it? Would this be what they do to vegetables you can buy in camping shops? I want to make vegetable salt.

Anyway, in answer to your question, I am sure someone will be along to help you re freezedrying veggies.



Me, I dehydrate veggies and fruits. I know it is not the same as freezedrying but I find that dehydrating stuff, it lasts for a long time and does not lose any nutrition.



What exactly is vegetable salt? Is it freezedried veggies made into powder?

Thanks for your reply Kelejan. Sorry I used the wrong place to introduce myself. Still have a lot to learn about using the site. Yes vegetable salt is a powdered form of freezedried vegetables with some tumeric, garlic and chilli for flavour. I want to make some for a friend who, for medical reasons, cannot use table salt and is finding meals very bland. As I am not familiar with the difference between freezedried and dehydrated vegetables I am not sure if I could use the latter to get the same result.
Any help I receive to shed light on this issue I would be very grateful for.
Didn't get the tomatoes in yesterday. My husband took the wheelbarrow away for the day. Husbands are a most unreliable commodity at times and can wreck the most carefully conceived plans! BUT they are very good at building square foot gardening frames and climbing frames, so life is sweet.
