Pineapple & Compost Empty Pineapple & Compost

Post  Old Hippie 8/23/2010, 4:05 pm

Over the weekend someone said something in a post about not putting pineapple in the compost pile. I think it was the person who posted about the coffee grounds for composting but now I can't find the thread that was in. I know you are supposed to go easy on the citrus stuff but I hadn't heard anything about pineapple before. My book on composting doesn't mention anything about it. Why shouldn't you put it in the compost? I have always thrown mine in the compost but we don't use that many of them so maybe that is why I haven't had any trouble. Or maybe I just haven't noticed there was a problem when there really was.

Good to go... may take longer than other vegetable matter because of its density.

Pineapple & Compost Empty Re: Pineapple & Compost

Thanks a lot. I was afraid I might have put something in my compost that I shouldn't have. If it takes longer to break down that is no problem. I put some fairly coarse stuff in my compost and when I sift it, I just throw the stuff back in that hasn't broken down enough or use it in the bottom of a new flower bed. One of these days I hope to get a compost shredder but they are big bucks so we are on the lookout for an old lawn mower at a yard sale or perhaps on freecycle that my husband can modify to make a shredder.
