Upper South and Midsouth Gardeners Beware
I tried to pick bugs and harvest in my garden last night, but I was drenched with sweat after just a couple of minutes and had to head for the a/c. I saw this heat warning today and I'm passing it along in case anyone's missed it in their own news. I may have to let the bugs have the squash and pumpkins. I can handle high temps for a short time, but I can't deal with this humidity.
Event: | Excessive Heat Warning |
Alert: | ...DANGEROUS COMBINATION OF HEAT AND HUMIDITY WILL CONTINUE THROUGH AT LEAST FRIDAY ACROSS THE MIDSOUTH... .VERY HOT TEMPERATURES ALONG WITH OPPRESSIVE HUMIDITY WILL CONTINUE EACH DAY ACROSS THE MIDSOUTH THROUGH AT LEAST FRIDAY. HEAT INDEX READINGS WILL REACH BETWEEN 110 AND 116 DEGREES EACH DAY. IN ADDITION...OVERNIGHT LOW TEMPERATURES WILL FAIL TO DROP BELOW THE MIDDLE 70S TO LOWER 80S. THIS WILL CREATE VERY DANGEROUS CONDITIONS WITH ELEVATED HEAT STRESS FOR THOSE THAT HAVE TO WORK OUTDOORS FOR A PROLONGED TIME OR FOR THOSE WITHOUT AIR CONDITIONING. PROPER PRECAUTIONS SHOULD BE TAKEN TO STAY COOL DURING THIS LONG LASTING HEAT WAVE. |

Down here in the Panhandle of Florida we have had heat indexes as high as 130 degrees. I work for a family practice physician and I will echo your warning. We have seen a lot of ppl with heat related ailments. A rule of thumb is to drink at least 8 oz of liquid per hour, and be VERY aware of how you are sweating and what you feel like. Warning signs are dizzyness and dry skin. You should be sweating under these conditions, and by the time you stop sweating you could be in serious trouble.

Our highs have hit 85 only five days this year. I don't think I could handle your heat anymore.

Thanks for the warning, ander217! It nice to know we're looking out for each other.

I agree, Pattipan.
Boffer, do you have any of that snow left? I think it would sizzle if it hit me right now, but I'm willing to risk it.
Sounds as though sceleste needs some, too. (Wow, 130 degrees with this humidity???) Maybe we should change our regional names to the Upper Sauna, Midsauna, and Lower Sauna.

Here's an aid to help visualize being cool again. I sent it to Ander a couple weeks ago, a bit prematurely I guess, when temps were hitting only 100.
