OH NOES! CUTWORMS!
I'm sooo upset, and need some help, pronto!
We went away for the weekend, and I came home to find THREE of my gorgeous oak-leaf lettuce wilted away to nothing.
As I pulled one up, the stem broke off (no wonder; it looked like Swiss cheese!) and I saw the tail end of a worm headed into the soil.
Yep. Cutworms.
How do I get rid of them? I dug after the worm (and around the other two plants), but I didn't find them.
I'm ticked off, and gutted at the loss....help?!

So Sorry, so disappointing to come home (which is usually good...) to find those nasties. Bit I don't know a thing about them. I hope someone else can help.

Re: OH NOES! CUTWORMS!
Hi,
Do not know if it is luck but I tried the barrier method and toothpicks this year. Keeping my fingers crossed, so far so good. The toothpick method is to put a toothpick on either side of the plant stem when you transplant. Seemed too cheap not to try. I will report more on the success or failure of those methods as the season passes.

Sadly, camprn, my lettuce were too big to retrofit them with tubes...but that's on the list for the next round!
I think I'm going to have to go buy some Bt or some nematodes. It's war.

Cutworms
Sorry to hear about your lettuce. It is so disappointing to see your hard work disappear overnight.
I hadn't seen cutworms in my garden for years and years, and suddenly this year they appeared again. I found them happily munching on my cabbage, and I suspect they were to blame for other plant damage I found.
I agree, it's time to bring out the tanks and big guns.
