Well, I guess this is where the rubber of SFG meets the road. It was one thing when everything was tiny and cute, but now things are getting bigger. I am a little afraid I may have been too optimistic with my plantings. Oh well, we shall see.

Cute little "three sisters" box:

Same box, now super fast growing I-may-have-planted-everything-too-close

Six (what was I thinking) heirloom tomatoes and a line of 4 different squash vines that are growing way too fast for my trellis building timetable. Had to throw in a temp trellis - doesn't the pumpkin know when I get paid?

My Garden Is Beginning to Scare Me Affraid It's scaring me too! WoW how it is growing! What kind of tomatoes you growing, are they determinate or indeterminate, if they are indeterminate you might try trimming out some of the suckers to make a little more room.
It's amazing how well things grow in a SFG!

Chopper, is it just you eating the tomatoes? You could make friends and neighbors really happy with extra tomatoes.

Or - if they are all the same kind - you could pull some, and make more room...and, no, don't even bother to ask - no way could I do that!

I got a six pack of heirloom tomatoes which were not identified, all different but it did say they were all indeterminate. I have been pinching out suckers, but can't even see where they are now. LOL. I have three more in a different bed that are Early Girl, Ace 100 (I think) and Better Boy and they are a little more under control. They were planted a few weeks earlier.

I do plan to either can or freeze or maybe both. I have a great tomato sauce recipe that calls for freezing.

I have never had a garden that made it through the whole season healthy so this is a new ball game for me.

wow your garden is looking awesome.

My tomatos have been in around 10 days now, same with peppers and neither are doing that great.

The cucumbers, lettuce, radish and corn are starting to take off.

The poor peppers all seem to have lost their leaves, but the ph is fine.

Chopper, your garden look fantastic! I'd be so encouraged if my garden looked that full and green! LOL! I'm halfway hoping/attempting to be like you.... yesterday I went out and tucked in some more seeds in all the nooks and crannies and corners I could find in my garden.... hehehe... we shall see if it works out! My Garden Is Beginning to Scare Me Empty Re: My Garden Is Beginning to Scare Me

My garden isn't quite so frightening, although it's growing like crazy, compared to its usual routine. My Garden Is Beginning to Scare Me Icon_biggrin

One volunteer tomato is at least 5' tall, and I counted 14 tiny-to-small tomatoes yesterday. The second-year plant has fewer fruit so far, but they're more mature. The Cherokee Purple is beginning to blossom. The dill is about 5' tall, producing heads. Bush beans should be ready in a week or so. The squash planted in Lowe's Mel's Mix are thriving, and for the first time ever, I expect a harvest. Even the corn looks healthy! Although the total crop of strawberries is small so far, there are still more than I've ever harvested before. And I continue harvesting lettuce (I just planted a slow-bolting mix for a possible summer crop).

A purple basil plant given to me last year by my neighbors is outgrowing its square, and I think I should transplant it. Would it grow in partial shade?

One of these days, I'll learn how to post pictures from my digital camera.

My Garden Is Beginning to Scare Me Empty RE: scary garden

Post  jinx 6/7/2010, 8:16 pm

This is my first year gardening as well as using SFG and I think I have over planted as well. I don't think I have to much of any one thing, just put to much in one box and may have a crowding problem once everything starts going to fruit. Just know you are not alone, there are many of us going through a learning process together.

Well, I followed the directions, so hopefully it will work out OK. This is a little different and is supposed to be crowded, so we shall see. I am just excited to see things thriving. Once I get past the panic! My Garden Is Beginning to Scare Me Icon_biggrin
