That is on my list for this weekend too. I need to get some old dead grass out of my asparagus bed too. My rhubarb is up and looking good! I, like OG, love it. My absolute favorite treat is strawberry-rhubarb pie.JAM23 wrote:Phew-direct sowed some beets, chard and carrots after work today. I am hoping these warm days help to warm up the soil to help them germinate and the cooler temps we are expecting next week will help them grow. Hope it's not too early!
My 1st set of radishes have popped up as well as a few peas and spinach. It's exciting to see things growing again!
My assorted flowers are up, so heating pad and lights in the basement are freed up for the hotties (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and ground cherries). Expecting rain tomorrow so want to get seeds in today!

First harvest of Rhubarb this year. Half of this is Canada Red rhubarb, and the other half is Glaskins Perpetual rhubarb. Their red color not only makes some beautiful pie and crisps, but these varieties are sweeter than the Victoria variety is.

Some of the Rhubarb stalks turned in to a delicious Rhubarb Crisp....

That looks delicious,OG! I have rhubarb ready to go, and I bought some strawberries, since mine aren’t happening yet.
Today, I put in tomatoes (one Sungold, 2 Brandywine, 1 yellow Brandywine, 1 yellow pear and my fave, Cherokee purple), multiple varieties of peppers, Ping Tung eggplant, Aunt Molly ground cherry, and 3 celery.
They are on heat in the basement. Will check on them in a couple days!

Well, you all have inspired me to jump on the rhubarb bandwagon! I just purchased my first rhubarb plant. The variety is Macdonald. I hope it's a good one! I remember my grandmother having a rhubarb plant and I loved it!

Thanks OhioGardener! Can't wait to see how this goes. This time next year I can make a rhubarb crisp with my own homegrown rhubarb!

The Sugar Daddy Snap Peas. The only problem with them is trying to stop eating enough of them in the garden to get some to the house! LOL

Re: N&C Midwest: March & April 2023
Second harvest of the Canada Red Rhubarb today. It will soon turn into another Rhubarb Crisp...
This Fall I think I am going to take out the two old Victoria Rhubarb plants and replace them with new crown splits from the Canada Red Rhubarb plant. The Canada Red not only looks better in pies and sauces because of the deep red color, but it is sweeter and stringless.

I had 2 serviceberry trees put in in my backyard today. They are small right now, but eventually could be tree sized!
Nothing is outside yet. Very cold! Like 34* an snowing basically all day on and off.

Hi all!
I haven't been on in a few years...my original, beautiful SFG garden flooded out. Lost all of my mels mix. It turns out our property floods majorly every spring atleast once from the creek. I took some time off gardening before rebuilding. Slowly started rebuilding last year with cement blocks. I was able to get a little going last year. This year, Ive been working on adding more beds & filling out the garden area. Started some seeds indoors, albeit a little late. A lot of my seeds are old, 2017+, but still trying to see which ones will germinate. Looking forward to getting to know everyone!

R&R Welcome back!
I'm so sorry about your garden flooding every spring. It's heart-breaking to build a SFG garden only for Mother Nature say Nope. I wish you a bountiful garden this summer.

Thank you so much! Im headed in the right direction, but holy moly its a lot of work. I figured if I do a little each day....I hope your gardening is going well. I saw the post where Yolos passed. I remember her from years ago. Her insight will be missed.sanderson wrote:R&R Welcome back!![]()

Yes, my table top garden is still doing well despite some more recent health problems. Please feel free to add a comment about Yolos. Her daughter and grandsons will be able to read it. Just a line or 2.

Hi R&R! Great to hear from you, but a bummer about the SFG flooding. Sounds like (and by your pics) you are well on the way to get back on track.
Yes, very sad about Yolos….her family would appreciate a glimpse back.
Glad you’re back!
