Now that I'm craving fresh peas, I am reminded - I've always heard how peas are one of the first crops to plant in the spring. But now I'm wondering if they can be planted now that it's definitely not cool weather anymore. (Or, to ask another way, do people succession plant peas?)

No, I don't succession plant peas after the first crop. I plant peas in March and they are done producing by the end of June. Sometimes I plant a second crop of peas in fall so that they can grow and produce during the cool fall weather, but that depends if I have open room on the arbor to plant the.

Re: Pea Picking Time
Love peas! They definitely prefer and basically only produce in cooler weather. I only grow sugar snap peas. I grew both sugar snaps and regular English peas a couple years ago. I just found the English peas were so much work, and I don’t think I had enough planted to be fruitful.?
They are delish though! I ate them raw….

Yeah, some of them get eaten right in the garden, and never make it to the house.

My four year old grandson was at my house the other day. He said he was hungry and opened my refrigerator. He asked me where the peas were. The kid actually wanted fresh garden peas as a snack. No cookies or other junk.

OG, just curious, do you not eat the whole pod of the sugar snaps?

Sometimes I do, depending on how mature the peas are. I love the young pods stir-fried. The peas I grow are Super Sugar Snap Pea, and if they are picked young the pods are super tender and super sweet. But, if I let them grow until the peas inside the pod are mature, the pod becomes thick and tough. While I'm working in the garden quite a few young pods get picked and eaten, while the mature ones are picked and put in the bowl the shell out the peas.

The package for the pea seeds says: This pea produces very heavy yields - sometimes twice as many pods as other varieties! The sweet, plump pods are delicious when eaten fresh, steamed, or stir-fried.

Just picked the first of the sugar snap peas and none of them made it into the house! Didn't grow these last year, so they are an extra special treat this year!

I'm not allowed to do that! LOL DW insists that at least enough to put on salads make it to the house. LOL
