and possibly my peppers and am diligent about covering them up at night, will a frosty night hurt them? Is it strictly if the frost touches them, or does the cold temperature bother them too?

When I put out tomatoes I usually cover each one with a 2 liter soft drink bottle with the bottom cut off. This protects the plants from wind, and mild frosts, and helps the plants to get a good start. I take the caps off the bottles unless it's gonna get cold at night.
