Standby Generators
PG&E is threatening to cut our power every time the wind blows. I just found out we can get a whole home standby generator that will kick in immediately and tie into our existing propane tank. It's pretty spendy, so we don't want to make a mistake. Have any of you had experience with these things?
Re: Standby Generators
CN, our son has one in California City (the Mojave desert), and it works very good for him. It even notifies him by text any time it is activated or does a self-test, or detects a problem. When he and his wife were visiting us while they were having the earthquakes out there, he got a text when it kicked on, and when power was restored. He says it was well worth the cost, especially with their new baby in the house.

Re: Standby Generators
OG, Did your son mention the $$ ? In the Mohave air conditioning would be critical.
Re: Standby Generators
We'd LOVE to have a whole house automatic one. We have a small one that will run the necessities that DH has to manually start. But it sure comes in handy....

Not the exact cost, but the generator alone cost a little over $4,000, and the contractor cost as much for installing it - close to $10K by the time all of the permits, inspections, etc., were done.
